Conotton Valley's Jim Monigold shows his favorite grip to teammate Keith Leggett and Newcomerstown's Bob Jacobs and Rick Vierheller.
GNADENHUTTEN - Conotton Valley took advantage of Newcomerstown errors to notch a victory in the Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament action yesterday. The Rockets met Gnadenhutten (3-3) Thursday in a game that was not reported and was won by Gnaden.
A big fifth-inning rally gave the Rockets the win over the Trojans after the county team had taken an early 1-0 lead. In the decisive inning, all runs were scored as a result of Trojan errors. Chuck Millhorn was the 1st Rocket to cross home plate after reaching on on a single and moving to 3rd on a double by Keith Leggett. Milllhorn scored on a wild pitch by Rick Vierheller. Leggett added the 2nd run of the inning as Trojan catcher Bob Jacobs misjudged a throw from 2nd baseman Duke DeLong. Jim Monigold reached 1st on another error, this time by Smith. He moved to 3rd on a double by Terry Stocker. The Trojan troubles continued as both Monigold and Stocker scored when centerfielder Warner Guy lost a pop-up by Larry Greenwood because of the sun.
Newcomerstown's lone run came in the 1st inning, as Bruce Widder scored on a Monigold wild pitch after being walked, stealing 2nd and reaching 3rd on a sacrifice by John Hurst. Monigold was in little trouble the remainder of the contest. Conotton Valley knotted the count in the 4th inning as Dan Morgan scored on a fielding error by Smith. Morgan had put a perfect bunt between Vierheller and 3rd baseman Widder before stealing 2nd and moving to 3rd on a sacrifice by Stocker.
Monigold was credited with the win, striking out 4 and walking 2. Vierheller was tagged with the loss despite a fine performance as he wiffed 6 and didn't give up a free pass. He was relieved by Dave Paulun in the 6th inning with Paulum issuing no walks and recording one strikeout. Leggett led the "hit parade" for the Rockets with a double and a single. Stocker and Neil Cadle also collected doubles. Millhorn had 2 singles and Morgan one to account for the rest of the Rockets' hits. The Trojans could get but 4 hits off Monigold, Widder smacking a double and a single and Ron Hurst 2 singles.
