66 - Strasburg Looking At Regional Tournament
NEW PHILADELPHIA - Strasburg (17-5) will try to do tonight at 8:00PM what no other basketball team has been able to do this season...beat Bridgeport (22-0). The two cage titans will square off in the New Philadelphia gymnasium in the finals of the Class A District Tournament. To the winner goes a berth in the Canton Regional against that city's upper bracket champion. Strasburg will take it's record into the battle, including a 70-52 victory over Brilliant in the opening game of the District. Bridgeport polished off Garaway 68-42 in its District debut. Strasburg will place its hopes squarely on the shoulders of 6-3 Junior John Studer. A fine all-around performer. Studer has poured 565 points through the nets, has more than 300 rebounds and about 100 assists...passes that led directly to a field goal. The 1964 Tigers, coached by Bob Shahan, were in the Regional and lost 62-54 to Mogadore. Strasburg also entered Regional play in 1946, 1947, 1953 and 1955. The chief problem for the Tigers is how to solve Bridgeport's tight full-court press. The Bulldogs looked plenty ferocious Wednesday against Garaway. Garaway did; however, give the Bulldogs a lot of trouble defensively. When they had to set up a pattern, the Bulldogs had trouble. They weren't hitting from the outside. The Tigers have the ability to get the job done; however, as their record attests. Only once were they soundly beaten. That was against Dalton when the score was 112-85. The Tigers' other losses were mighty close, 68-64 and 54-53 to Midvale and 55-50 and 69-67 to Hiland. They avenged those 2 losses to Hiland by winning 65-63 in Sectional Tournament play.
