66 - New Philadelphia Drops Gnaden 4-2 (4-12-66)

NEW PHILADELPHIA - The Strong arm of Tom Kurtz (1-0) and some timely hitting enabled New Philadelphia (1-0) to open its baseball season on a successful note yesterday, downing Gnadenhutten (0-2) at Waterworks Diamond.

Kurtz limited the Indians to 6 hits, struck out 8 and walked one in the game, called after 4.5 innings.  Indian Bill Kohl (0-2) was tough, too, giving up but 4 hits, while striking out 7 and passing 2.  The Quakers, coached by Leo Benjamin, got 2 runs in each the 2nd and 3rd innings.  The Indians, under the direction of Ted Martin, got a run in each of the 3rd and 4th frames.  Kurtz started the uprising in the 2nd stanza, drawing a walk.  Doug Miller singled and Jim Walton walked to load the bases.  Then  with 2 outs, Chuck Moore rapped a double to score 2 runs.  In the 3rd inning, Eric Porter walked and Tom Struchen slammed a Home Run (1).  The Indians broke the ice in the 3rd with consecutive hits by Moore, Don Finnicum and Mike Kail.  Laughlin walked in the 4th, Kohl was hit by a pitch and Kail again delivered a run-scoring single.
