NEWCOMERSTOWN - Finally! Newcomerstown (4-14) broke a long dry spell Saturday night, edging Port Washington (6-12) for its 1st victory since December 18th. The win ups the Trojans' record entering tournament play and snapped a 10-game losing streak. Joh Hurst, who captured game scoring honors with 34 points, was the hero for Jim Antonelli's lads, tossing in a goal with one second left to play. Port Washington jumped out to a 6-0 lead, then the 2 teams fought bitterly the rest of the game. The Purple Riders of Coach George Thomas led 24-18 at the 1st stop and 35-33 at the half before the Trojans battled back to tie the count 53-53 going into the 4th quarter. Port Washington led 62-57 at one time in the final frame and held a 70-69 lead at 2:15. With 1:28 to go, Rich Fillman upped that to 72-69. Hurst, a possible All-Ohio candidate, then whipped in a goal with 48 seconds left to cut the deficit to one point. Purple Rider Jerry Stephens had a chance to set it up with 6 seconds remaining, but was unable to connect on 2 foul shots. Antonelli called time out to plan strategy and Hurst made it work by pumping in a 2-pointer just before the buzzer. For the night, Newcomerstown hit on 27 of 70 action shots and 19 of 28 fouls. Port Washinton made 3 more goals in 91 tries for 33 percent and was 12 of 21 from the foul lines. Rebounds favored Port Washington 52-44. Duke DeLong supported hurst with 15 points. Fillman had 20, Stevens 19, Jeff Huston 12 and Greg Bender 10 for Port Washington. The Newcomerstown Reserves clobbered the Port Washington Reserves 61-39.
