66 - Garaway Brings Down Hiland 82-64 (1-29-66)

Garaway's Jim Young isn't doing pushups, he's just scrambled after a loose ball.  Watching are teammate Dave Andreas (24) and Hiland's Ken Miller.

Pirate Dan Andreas (42) and Hawk John Hochstetler fight for a rebound.  That's Pirate Jim Young in the rear.

SUGARCREEK - Hiland's touted Hawks (13-4) had their feathers ruffled for the 2nd straight night Saturday, this time by powerful Garaway (11-2).  Just Friday night the Hawks were beaten 73-66 by Dennison St. Mary's.  The Pirates had picked up a win against West Holmes on the 22nd (no stats).

Garaway, coached by Glenn Bower, was plenty convincing as it opened a 22-8 lead at the end of the 1st quarter, led 41-25 at the half and was on top 65-40 going into the final frame.  Defense was the key for the slick-working Pirates as they limited Hiland to 22 field goal hits in 63 tries...only 38 percent.  That isn't so bad in these days, but the Pirates at the same time were working for 30 hits in 61 tries...just under 50 percent.  From the foullines, the Pirates made 22 of 28 and the Hawks 20 of 25.  Rebounds favored Garaway 47 to 21, with 6-4 All-Ohioan Dan Andreas pulling in a whopping 28.  Andreas also paced the Pirate scoring attack, netting 28 points.  Teammate Jim Young mustered 24 and Don Richardson 15.  High for the Hawks of Coach Abe Mast was All-Ohio candidate John Hochstetler with 24.  Merle Mullet had 14.

Dave Andreas, Dan's twin brother, put Garaway ahead 2-0 and the Hawks never caught up.  Garaway held a 20-point spread most of the time after the 1st frame.  Dan, continuing his hot shooting, hit on 11 of 21 from the floor and 6 of 10 from the foul lines.  Young was 12 of 13 from the foul lines and 6 of 8 from the floor.  Hochstetler, held scoreless in the 1st quarter by Dan Andreas, finished with 8 of 20 from the floor and 6 of 8 from the foul lines.  Young held Art Miller to one field goal.  The Pirates, and winners of 8 straight, will host Strasburg Friday in a crucial County Class A League battle.  Hiland hosts Orrville Saturday.  No mention of a reserve game.
