66 - Hilliard of Midvale Applauded By School Board

COACHES OF CHAMPIONS...Charlie Huggins of Strasburg, Pete Hilliard of Midvale and Glenn Bower of Garaway look  over the final standings of the Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball League.  What they see is a 3-way tie for 1st, the Tigers, Blue Devils and Pirates all showing a 5-1 record.

MIDVALE - Ralph (Pete) Hilliard, the only coach in the history of a Tuscarawas County school to lead his team to 200 victories, was officially commended last night by Indian Valley's Board of Education.  The Midvale mentor reached the milestone February 5th when the Blue Devils defeated Port Washington 103-73.  They have since won one more game to put him over the 200-win mark entering next week's Class A Sectional Tournament at Dover.  Superintendent Leon Force,  who  is in Atlantic City New Jersey, attending a nationwide meeting of high school superintendents, commented in the board's agenda:

"He (Hilliard) has achieved a goal sought by, but not reached by, most coaches.  This feat is worthy of our personal and official commendation."

The motion for the commendation read:

"I move this board of education officially commend Mr. Ralph Hilliard, head basketball coach at Midvale these past 12 years, for his outstanding success as a basketball coach.  I further move that the board records show the board's action and a notation made that Mr. Ralph Hilliard is the 1st coach to achieve 200 victories in Tuscarawas County."

Hilliard will receive official recognizance in a letter signed by all board members and sent to him.
