SUGARCREEK - Galen Swartzxentruber, Hiland High pitcher, won his own ball game yesterday afternoon in the Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament as the Hawks eliminated Strasburg (3-2). Swartzentruber slid home with the winning tally in the bottom of the 7th when Tiger catcher Bob Welling let a Gene Bayer pitch get away from him. The victory advanced the Hawks to today's semifinal contest at Gnadenhutten against Tuscarawas (4-1) at 3:30.
Strasburg struck early in the game, scoring 3 runs in the 1st frame without a hit as Hiland committed 3 errors. In the 2nd stanza the Tigers increased their lead to 4-0 when Tom Margo scored on a hard-hit single to right field by Dave Keller (4). Hiland retaliated in its half of the inning, scoring 3 runs. The Hawks loaded the bases as John Hochstetler singled to center, Carl Swartzentruber hit a dribbler between short and 3rd on which a play wasn't made and Merle Hershberger walked. Hochstetler and Swartzentruber scored when Ron Stutzman laid down a perfect bunt along the 3rd base line. The 3rd run resulted when Randy Starner was tossed out 2nd to first.
In the 3rd inning Hiland again loaded the bases. Art Miller, who had doubled, scored on a wild pitch and Hochstetler came in on a looper between 2nd and 3rd by Hershberger. Strasburg knotted the count 5-5 when John Studer belted a double (2) to score Mike Rieger, who had walked, in the top of the seventh. Galen Swartzentruber, Hiland's 7th inning leadoff man, drew a walk off Bayer. He stole 2nd, went to 3rd on a passed ball and scored on another passed ball to end the contest. From the mound he struck out 3 and walked 8. Glen Miller (0-1) started for Strasburg, yielding 4 runs and walking one before being relieved by Bayer with one out in the third. During his stint, Bayer (3-1) walked 4 and whiffed 3.
