NEW PHILADELPHIA - Strasburg's talented Tigers (17-5) didn't waste any time letting Brilliant's Blue Devils know who was boss last night in the opening of the District Tournament play in New Philadelphia gymnasium. The Charles Huggins-coached Tigers stunned Brilliant with some tremendous hustle, great outside shooting and superior board work to roar to a 24-7 advantage at the 1st stop en route to a their victory. The victory gives the Tigers the right to return to action Friday against the winner of tonight's game between Garaway (17-4) and Bridgeport (21-0).
Great teamwork was the keynote of Strasburg's 1st quarter rampage. All 5 starters contributed to the scoring, with All-Ohio candidate John Studer leading the way with 10 points. Strasburg dominated board work especially in the opening frame when it pulled down 14 rebounds to just one for Brilliant . Studer led the way in this department, too, snaring 5. Lending plenty of support were Ed Yackey, Ed Rusk and Chuck Jones with 2 each. Studer, Rusk and Yackey continued their excellent work all night, potting 19, 15 and 13 points, respectively and pulling in 15, 11 and 15 rebounds, respectively. Adequate help came from Mike Rieger, Gary Feller and Gene Bayer. Rusk was outstanding, providing the steadying influence with a pair of goals in each quarter. He was the man who kept the Tigers going when Studer was on the bench the last 2.5 minutes of the 2nd and 3rd quarters because of personal foul trouble. Jones and Yackey also spent time on the bench for the same reason.
Both teams made their 1st two field goal tries...Blue Devil Rich Lewis on a layup, Studer from 15 feet out, Blue Devil Charlie Bailey from 20 feet away and Yackey from inside the key. Studer put the Tigers on top for the 1st time, 6-4, with a shot from inside the key at 8:42 and followed with a rebound along the baseline. After Pete Adrian scored for Brilliant, Rusk popped in a goal from the corner and another from 8 feet along the baseline off a rebound and the Tigers didn't let up until they had a 21-6 lead. Strasburg made 7 of their 1st ten field goal tries in that 1st frame and ended with 11 of 19. Brilliant made 3 of its 1st six and finished with 2 of 19. The slick-working Tigers, screening, passing off underneath for baskets and ball-hawking on defense, hiked their advantage to 29-7 early in the 2nd stanza then relaxed a bit and permitted Brilliant to close the gap somewhat, 33-18, at the half.
Unable to regain their momentum, the Tigers saw their huge lead dwindle to 33-25 within 2 minutes of the 3rd quarter. Then Studer, Rusk, Rieger, Studer (foul), Rusk, Rieger and Studer all drilled in shots to push the margin to 46-25 with about 3 minutes left. From then on it was merely a matter of time as the Tigers led 52-35 at the stop and didn't let Brilliant get any closer than 17 points, 57-40 at 5:25, in the final frame.
For the night the Tigers hit on 30 of 68 field goal tries for 44 percent, made 10 of 24 fouls and pulled in 53 rebounds. Each team was called for 18 personals. Strasburg committed 13 turnovers and Brilliant 7.
