66 - Strasburg Clips Conotton Valley 65-63 In Double Overtime (2-26-66)

DOVER - The Dover Class A Sectional Tournament continued on the 26th of February with Hiland beating Dover St. Joseph (missing, no stats) in the opening game.  We pick up the action in the Strasburg-Conotton Valley game late in the 3rd quarter when Jim Monigold, of Conotton Valley (15-5) , steals the ball and passes off to Conner who drove at :08 for a 42-40 edge going into the final frame.  There were 3 straight turnovers by Strasburg (2 for traveling and one when Conner stole the ball) and a miscue by Conotton Valley as the 4th quarter begins.

Monigold dropped in a rebound and teammate Neil Cadle a corner shot to give the Rockets a 46-40 margin.  Studer hit on a 7-footer from the baseline, but Conner sank 2 fouls to put the Rocket margin back to 6 points, 48-42.  But, the talented Tigers (16-5) refused to allow the Rockets to deliver the killing blow, as Ed Yackey put in a rebound, John Studer a goal off a fast break and Ed Rusk a corner shot to tie it 48-48 at 2:25.  Chuck Jones put the Tigers back on top from the foul line at 1:52 and after a missed Rocket shot, the Tigers tried to hang onto the ball and run out the clock.  The Rockets went out after the ball and Yackey was fouled.  The Tiger had missed 4 straight charity tosses in the 4th quarter, but answered this challenge by dropping both ends of a one-and-one through the nets.  That made it 51-48 at 1:23.  Conner scored for Conotton Valley at :56 and after Studer hit on the 2nd of a 2-shot foul, Monigold flipped in a shot from the key with 17 seconds left in regulation time to knot the count 52-52.  Bruce Millhorn stole the ball for Conotton Valley, but had to take a desperation shot from 25 feet away at :01 and the ball was off target.

Monigold, extremely calm despite the mounting pressure, hit from the key at 2:26 of the extra period to give the Rockets a 54-52 edge.  Ken Beamer then blocked a shot by Rusk, but the former was called for traveling and on the in-bounds play Monigold was called for fouling Studer...the Rocket's 5th foul which put him out of the action.  Studer made  both shots to tie the count, then Yackey rebounded a missed Tiger attempt to make it 56-54 at 1:18.  Millhorn's try was off target and Tiger Mike Rieger, the shortest man on the court at 5-8, hustled for the rebound.  There were 41 seconds left and the Tigers called time.  Again the Tigers held onto the ball, trying to run out the clock.  Conner then fouled Studer with 14 seconds to go and the Rockets called time.  Studer was unable to hit this time and Conner grabbed the rebound.  He raced down court and put the ball in the nets...but the officials ruled he was fouled before his shot.  He got the 2 points back from the foul line at :09 to tie the score 56-56. Rieger's shot from the top of the key at the buzzer was short of the mark, so the 2 fine teams were forced into a 2nd extra 3-minute period.

Studer took a pass from Jones off the jump at the beginning of the period and raced in for a goal to put Strasburg ahead 58-56.  After Cadle made a foul, Rusk goaled to make it 60-57.  Each team committed a turnover, then Rieger calmly sank 2 tries after being fouled by Conner...his 5th.  That gave the Tigers a 62-57 edge at 1:12.  Tim Stearns kept Conotton Valley's hopes alive by rimming a shot, then a foul shot by Studer made it 63-59 at :57.  The hustling Rieger then stole the ball and went in for a goal with 19 seconds left to give the Tigers a 65-59 margin.  Beamer then sank 2 fouls, stole the ball on the in-bounds play and put it through the nets to end the scoring for the night.

For the game, Strasburg hit on 22 of 60 field goal tries and 21 of 34 fouls.  Conotton Valley made 25 of 64 floor attempts and 13 of 30 charities.  Sixteen personals were called against the Tigers and 22 against the Rockets.  Strasburg led 43 to 30 in rebounds.  The Tigers committed 14 turnovers and the Rockets 10.  Monigold and Conner shared scoring honors with 20 points each.  Beamer ended with 12.  For Strasburg, Studer had 19, Jones and Yackey 12 and Rusk 11.  Yackey had 16 rebounds and Studer 15.  Cadle paced the Rockets with 11.
