66 - Tusky Valley In Revenge Win Against Dover St. Joseph's 64-48 (1-29-66)

ZOARVILLE - Tuscarawas Valley (5-9) continued its improved brand of ball Saturday night, whipping Dover St. Joseph's (6-9) to avenge an earlier 49-47 setback.  The victory for the hustling Trojans of coach Bill Frye is their 2nd straight (Tuscarawas "no stats" and a league game and Dover St. Joseph's).  TV's last lost was to Hiland (no stats).  The Trojans now have a shot at finishing even, as they have 4 games remaining.  They will host Malvern Friday, greet Gnadenhutten Feb 8th, visit Port Washington Feb 11 and close at Tuslaw Feb 12.  Art Teynor's Ramblers host Newcomerstown Saturday, visit Guernsey Catholic at Lafferty Feb 11th and end by hosting Garaway  Feb 19th.

The Trojans outhustled the Ramblers for the most part Satuday night and led 39 to 28 in rebounds.  They also fired in 23 of 52 action attempts for a respectable 44 percent and made 8 of 20 fouls.  St. Joseph's was 18 of 59 from the floor for a cold 30 percent and 12 of 20 from the foul lines.  Tuscarawas Valley displayed good teamwork, working the ball in for shots around the key and closer several times.  At other times the Trojans fired away from out front and found the range quite often.

Frye's men led 11-10 at the 1st stop and 41-37 after 3 periods.  St. Joseph's had gone on top 24-21 at the half.  Roaring out in the 3rd quarter, the Trojans went ahead for keeps at 5:02 when Dave Clugston fired in a goal to make it 32-30.  Clugston and big Dan Burrier, 6-5 and about 240, sparked the Trojans in the 3rd quarter with 5 and 7 points, respectively.  Burrier and  Dick Harvey ended with top scoring honors for Tusky Valley with 10 points each.  Ray Nists and Tom Symons both got 9, Clugston 7, Tom Studer 5 and  Terry Hay 4 in the well-balanced attack.  For St. Joseph's, Dave Myers had 13, Mick McCracken and Denny Capozella 10, Jeff Lammers 9 and Larry Smith 6.  Nist led both teams in rebounds, working his way for 11.  Burrier snared 8 and Hay 6.  Burrier got 5 of his rebounds and Symons  4 of his in the deciding 3rd quarter.  In turnovers, the Trojans committed 7 and the  Ramblers 5.

The game was nip-and-tuck until the Trojans found some breathing room in that 3rd quarter when it was 38-32 at 2:19.  They held a 7-point lead, 50-43, at 2:16 of the finale.  St.  Joseph's biggest margin was 5 points, 22-17 at 1:59 of the 2nd stanza and 24-19 later in the same period.  The score was tied 4 times and the lead changed hands on 10 occasions.  At the outset of the 3rd quarter the hard-working Burrier got loose for a goal at 7:36 and made it a 3-point play to tie the count 24-24 when he was fouled by Smith.  That seemed to be the spark the Trojans needed.  The 2 teams fought back and forth until Clugston's go-ahead points.  Burrier followed that goal with one of his own and after Smith rebounded in 2 points, Symons and Nist poured one in apiece to make it 38-22 at 2:19.  Myers then countered with a 3-pointer, but Nist rebounded in a shot and after Capozella hit from out front, Clugston connected at the foul line  with 11 seconds left in the frame.  Lammers cut the deficit to 2 points, 41-39, with a goal early in  the 4th quarter, but Harvey, who got 5 points in the  key finale, got a goal and  Symons, who had 5 in the same period, did likewise to give the Trojans a 45-39 margin.  Studer added a point from the foul line and the Trojans held about that spread the rest of the way.
