NEW PHILADELPHIA - Faillure to solve a tight full-court press and inability to put the ball through the nets with their usual consistency forced Garaway's Pirates  (17-5) off the 1966 tournament trail last night.  New Philadelphia gymnasium was jammed an hour before game time for this District battle between the Pirates and unbeaten Bridgeport (22-0).  The 2 powerhouses fought on even terms for one half then the Bulldogs outscored Garaway 22-8 and 26-13 in the last 2 quarters to rack up another victory.  Bridgeport thus earned the right to battle Strassburg (17-5) Friday at 8:00PM to see who will go on to Regional competition at Canton.  Glen Bower's Pirates completely outplayed the heralded Bulldogs for 2 quarters.  Only their inability to hit after working in for the good shots prevented them from building a sizeable margin.  As it was, the Pirates held a 13-8 lead at the 1st stop and after a see-saw 2nd stanza, had a 21-20 edge at the intermission.

Bridgeport, switching from a zone press to a man-to-man press in the 2nd quarter, really put on the pressure in the 3rd quarter.  They limited Garaway to but 6 foul shots until Terry Gerber found the range from the floor at 1:11, taking a pass from Rod Showers off the fast break.  By the, Bridgeport held a commanding 42-29 margin.  The Bulldogs hiked that 3rd stop lead to 45-29 early in the final frame before Garaway rallied somewhat to pull to within 22 points, 45-33, as it went into a press of its own.  But Bridgeport quickly solved that and soon held a 57-35 advantage.  Bulldog starter George Hasbdo twisted his ankle at this point and had to leave the game and Bower substituted freely.  Bridgeport went on to pile up a 65-40 margin before it put in the "shock troops".

Dan Andreas ended with 16 points to pace Garaway; although, he sat out a minute and a half of the 1st quarter and 4 minutes of the 2nd stanza because of personal foul trouble.  Bridgeport ended with 31 of 64 filed goal tries...mostly layups...for 48 pecent.  It added 6 of 15 fouls pulled in 33 rebounds and was called for 19 personals.  Garaway made 13 of 48 field goal attempts for a cold 27 percent, added 16 of 25 fouls, snared 38 rebounds and was whistled for 14 personals.  The Pirates committed 19 turnovers and the Bulldogs 14.  Garaway ends their season at 17-5 and Bridgeport takes a 22-0 record against Stasburg on Friday.
