61 - TV Survives Yet Another Scare 59-57 (2-17-61)

PHOTO:  Ron Lake (3) of Tuscarawas Valley edges in front of Port Washington's Jim Bender (42) to grab a loose basketball in the hotly contested duel between the 2 teams.  It was won 59-57 by the Trojans in the late seconds.

PHOTO:  They were all looking for the ball when the shutter snapped on this action from last night's Tusky Valley - Port Washington thriller.  Those looks of anguish are held by Alvin Fiullman (20) of the Riders, Al Cerett (5) and Mike Widder (25) of Tuskey Valley and Jim Hannahs (32) of Port.

PHOTO:  A mountain of hands and arms goes for a loose ball in the  exciting Port Washington - Tuscarawas  Valley game last night in county tourney action at Dennison.  Identifiable are Bill Phillips (22), Gary Gay (30) and Jim Hannahs (32) all of Port Washington and Jim Studer (33), who played the big hero's role by scoring the winning  bucket with 8-seconds left, Ron Lake (3) and Al Cerett (5) all of Tuscarawas Valley.

DENNISON - In the only "edge-of-the-seat" contest of the evening, Port Washington came up with  its second straight spirited effort in as many years in tourney action to all but end the hopes of the fast-stepping Tuscarawas Valley Trojans.  In almost a repeat performance of their battle of last year, the game was was decided in the fading seconds.  And, it was ironic that the near "goat" of the game also proved the "hero" for league co-champion Tuscasrawas Valley.  A overanxious dribble by husky Jim Studer gave Port the ball with 47 seconds left when one of the dribbling bounces went back over the 10-second line.  With TV leading 57-56 at the time,  the mistake could have been a costly one.  On the turnover, Port took charge and moved toward its bucket.  With 26 seconds left, and during a stall, Gary Gay was fouled by Ron Lake and given a one-and-one foul situation, meaning he had to make the  first  effort for a bonus.  Gay dropped the first toss to tie it at 57-57, but missed his second attempt.  By the time the ball was taken out of bounds and thrown up court there were only 22 seconds left and TV in possession.  Coach Bob Heller called time and planned his strategy.  Apparently, it called for one quick pass to Studer near the key, for the three-year veteran got  the ball at the foul stripe and with eight seconds showing, jumped and parted the nets perfectly for a 59-57 lead.  One last desperate fling by Port was off to the  left as the shot was hurried as 2 seconds showed.  Thus it was that the 6-foot veteran Studder, who had played a whale of a game and took honors with 23 points to provde the big spark for TV, transformed his near "goat" miscue into a forgotten matter in heroic fashion.

It was a nip-and-tuck thriller all the way as the teams were tied 18 times and the lead exchanged hands no less than 17 occasions.  But, for the most part, Port was the pace-setter.  The Purple Riders of Coach Dick King led at the first stop 18-17 and 35-33 at the half before trailing 48-46 going into the  fourth.  With 4:10 minutes remaining, Port led 54-51.  But  Studer potted his 8th and 9th straight fouls of the game to narrow the margin to one at 54-53.  Jim Bender,  last year's tourney sensation with 39 points,  but held to two field goals last night, then widened the gap to three for Port at the 3:50 mark on two charities.  On a turnover, Port regained the ball with  3:03 left and worked out the clock until it showed 1:50 at whih time Al Cerett stole it for TV.  Cerett threw it to Ron Lake who in turn found Mike Widder near the key for a big two-pointer to put the Trojans in front 57-56 with 1:41 left.  TV again regained the ball on a Port traveling violation with 1:31 showing and stalled it until 47-seconds were left and Studer over dribbled.

Both teams went most of the way without one of their starters.  Tony Nigro of Port left with 6:02 left in the second on four personals and lasted only 1:35 minutes after reentering in the last quarter.  Rod Cropper was lost in the second quarter when he reinjured a football-knee for Tusky Valley.  The extent of Cropper's injury was unknown, according to Trojan  Coach Bob Heller.  Heller explained Cropper had sprained the knee in last week's game with Garaway.  "When we lost Cropper, our big rebounder, we had to go for broke," Heller said.  "They were as tough as I thought they'd be.  Port played a real game.  This is the third straight year we've played them in the tournament and I was looking for something  like this."  Coach  Dick King of  Port Washington called his team's performance "a real fine job."  "Tusky Valley has a good team, but I thought our boys played a tremendous game.  The scoreboard might say they lost, but I say they won."  Tusky Valley hit 20 of 60 goal tries for 33.3 percent and 19 of 24 foul shots.  Port Washington's main forte was its foul shooting.  The Riders hit 29 of 37,while picking up only 14 goals, 6 less than the Trojans.  They attempted 51 to end with a 25.6 percentage.  Flashy Port guard Bill Phillips led Port with 16 points.  Bender had 14, 10 from the foul line, and Jim  Hannahs had 12.  Widder potted 14 and Lake 13, behind Studer.

61 - No Doubt About It, Garaway 94 - Stone Creek 62 (2-17-61)

Gale Sauser, Stone Creek's high-scoring star drives under the basket for 2 more points.  Teammate Larry Stephan (right) watches in anticipation of grabbing the rebound.  Needless to say, Sauser didn't miss.

DENNISON - It was evident from the beginning that Garaway (17-4) had only to name its final score and then go get it.  Stone Creek (5-16) simply did not have the manpower to cope with the powerful Pirate attack.  The Panthers put on a strong show in the first period and were behind only 15-13 late in the stanza.  But that was the closest they ever got to Garaway.  Dan Bleininger cashed in on 2 free throws for the Bucs.  Bob Raber followed with 2 of the same, and Jarret Gray got a tip in  to give Garaway a 21-13 lead at the first stop.  From then on Garaway piled up the lead, posting a 44-30 margin at halftime.  Buc Coach Glenn Bower began substituting in the third quarter, but it didn't stem the attack.  Garaway led 68-42 going into the final period.  Bob Raber and Tom Andreas, Senior veterans, provided the big punch.  Raber tallied 29 points, and Andreas, who fouled out with 5:51 remaining in the game, hit for 26.  Gray followed with 14.  Stone Creek's Gale Sauser ended his high school career by scoring 26 points.  He fouled out with 4:33 to play.  Sauser had been the leading scorer in the Class "A" League this season.  Cliff Endlich was the only other Panther in double figures, scoring  13 points.  "They all played a fine game.  There's not too much you can say when you win  by 30 points," Garaway Coach Bower said.  "Just too many "horses" for us" was remarked by Ken Lawhun, Panther Coach.  Garaway hit 33 goals in 76 tries for 43.4 percent, the best mark of the night among the 6 teams.  The Pirates added 28 foul shots in 41 attempts.  Stone Creek was limited to 46 field attempts, making 14 for 30.5 percent.  It meshed 34 of 41 foul shots.

61 - Midvale Eliminates Baltic 52-43 (2-17-61)

DENNISON - Warren (Corky) Leggett evidently was the spark Midvale (12-7) needed to provide a big lift.  Leggett came into the lineup in the second period after the Blue Devils had fallen behind 10-5 at the end of the first quarter.  And at halftime the "Big Blue" had narrowed the count on Baltic (10-11) to 18-16.  With Neal Beans and Bob Byers setting the pace Midvale tied the game at 24-24 with 3:25 remaining in the third period and went on to score 6 more straight points for a commanding margin going into the final period.  Coach Pete Hillard of Midvale explained he didn't start Leggett because "he had influenza."  "I wasn't going to  play him unless I had to, and we had to.  It made a big difference with him in the lineup," Leggett ended with 13 points.  Hilliard was quick to point out the fine job Beans did of sweeping the board.  He also led the Blue Devils in scoring with 18 points.  "Byers' job of guarding Lautenschleger (Larry), had plenty to do with the victory," Hilliard added.  "That was probably as good a job defensively as we have done all season."  Lautenschleger was limited to 13 points, quite a bit from his 19-point average.  Willis Mullet added 17 points for the Eagles.  "It was just a case of not hitting," Eagle mentor Jon Hall said.  "We were moving too slow in the first half and they beat us on the boards."  Baltic made 16 of 45 field tries for 35.5 percent and 11 of 17 foul shots.  Midvale meshed 18 of 59 fro 30.5 percent and 15 of 28 from the foul line.

61 - Tusky Just Gets By Fairless 71-70 (2-13-61)

TUSCARAWAS - A field goal by Chet Summers with 10 seconds remaining to play gave the Tuscarawas Broncos (12-6) a narrow nod over invading Fairless here Saturday night.  As a result Tuscarawas will enter this week's Tuscarawas County Class "A" League Tournament on a winning streak of 7 games.  The score was tied at 69-69 when Fairless' Larry Spurgeon connected on a free throw to give the Falcons a 70-69 lead with 15 seconds remaining in the game.  Summers then hit on his goal to provide the winning margin.  Summers and Ben Metzger led the Broncos with 16 points apiece.  Vic Vesco added 11.  Paul Slayman who missed a free throw when time had elapsed and an opportunity to send the game into overtime, scored 12 points for Fairless.  Coluey, Larry Wenger and Glen Troyer led the Falcon attack with 15 points each.  Fairless; however, won the Reserve game over Tuscarawas (10-7) 48-46.

61 - Midvale Lights A Spark Against Port 77-56 With Bench Help (2-11-61)

MIDVALE - A couple of reserves provided a real spark for Midvale (4-4) (11-7) in its win over Port Washington, avenging a 60-59 defeat suffered at Port (2-6) (8-10) earlier this season.  Jim Tidrick and Jim Weaver, entering the game early when 2 regulars were hampered by personal fouls, accounted for 19 of the Blue Devils points.  The Devils led 15-12 at the first stop and were in front 34-27 at intermission.  They waxed hot in the  third to  break itopen, outscoring Port 19-10 in the stanza for a 53-37 advantge at the stop.  Neal Beans was a major reason for the third quarter uprising as the veteran Junior hit 16 of his 24 points in the second half and played a scrappy board game, Tidrick and  Rick Belknap picked up 11 each.  Bill Phillips paced Port with 18, Jim Bender had 12 and Gary Gay 11.  It was a complete sweep for Midvale.  The Junior High game started off the night with Midvale trampling Port Washington 46-24.  Then in the Reserve game, Midvale (11-6) roped Port Washington (5-8) 44-36.

SUGARCREEK - A complete reversal in Tuscarawas Valley's style of play, undoubtedly had the key role in last night's victory  over Garaway (7-1) (16-3).  During the major  portion  of the season the Trojans (7-1) (12-6) had gained a relutation for being a fast-breaking team that used a full court press and man-to-man defense.  With Coach Bob (The Fox) Heller directing the maneuvers Tuscarawas Valley switched styles, using a zone defense, that fell back to wait for Garaway and a deliberate offense.  The Trojans' keene eye at the free throw line and a direct opposite performance by Garaway certainly didn't help the Pirates in their bid for a second successive undisputed league crown.  Garaway which outgoaled Tuscarawas Valley 19-16, made only 9 of 21 free throws, while the Trojans cashed in on 26 of 33 to more than take care of the disadvantage.  Jim Studer, Mike Widder and Ron Lake were the big guns on the offense, far from a style reversal.  Studer poured in 22 points to lead the victory, while Widder and Lake gave big helping hands with 16 and 14 points, respectively.  Rod Cropper, the tallest man in the Trojan lineup at 6-foot, was a demon on the boards and Al Cerett, whose lone goal was a shot from the Tusky Valley 10-second line just as the buzzer sounded at halftime to give the Trojans a 4 point lead.  Garaway's high scoring Bob Raber was limited to 3 points by the rugged Trojan defense.  Tom Andreas, the team's second highest led the Pirates with 11 points.  Roy Yoder followed with 10.  Tuscarawas Valley took only 41 shots from the field with its now slow-moving  offense and made 16 for 39 percent.  Garaway took 55 and made 19 for 35 percent.  In the Junior High game, Garaway was the victor by whipping Tuscarawas Valley 44-20.  Tusarawas Valley Reserves (9-6) bowled over the Garaway Reserves (8-6) 39-33.

61 - Make It 16 Straight For Strasburg As They Lose To Waynedale 65-44 (2-8-61)

STRASBURG - Strasburg (1-16) continued to take its lumps last night.  The Tigers suffered their 16th straight seback at the hands of the Waynedale Golden Bears.  The Tigers led throughout the first period until the Bears deadlocked the count 12-12 at the end of the quarter.  In the second quarter the 2 teams played "CAT AND MOUSE," but at the tail end Strasburg comitted several turnovers and Waynedale turned them into 2-pointers and led 28-22 at halftime.  Strasburg could do nothing right the remainder of the way as the Bears won  going away.  Jerry Haskins led the victory with 21 points, while Bill Lobel tallied 17 and Ed Franks 17.  Jim Clymer and Adrian Edie topped the Tigers with 14 and 10 points, respectively.  Strasburg made 4 of 13 foul shots and 20 of 60 field attempts for 33 percent, while the Bears hit 25 goals in 75 tries for 33 percent and 15 of 27 free throws.  Waynedale Reserves also tripped up the Strasburg Reserves (8-8) 34-24.

61 - TV In A Breeze Over Malvern 73-39 (2-8-61)

BOLIVAR - Tuscarawas Valley (11-6) breathed easy last night when it warmed up for Friday night's important Tusarawas County Class "A" duel against Garaway (16-2), by soundly thumping Malvern.  Coach Bob Heller of the Trojans substituted freely, giving his subs plenty of action.  All but one of the 10 who saw action gained the scoring column.  In boosting their record the Trojans were led by Al Cerett's 20 points, his high of the season.  Ron Lake and Mike Widder followed with 16 apiece.  Tom Andrews led the Hornets with 11 points.  Tuscarawas Valley posted quarter margins of 22-6, 32-14 and 43-23 and finished the night by bombarding the nets for 30 points in the final quarter.  Percentagewise the Trojans had an off night.  They made only 28 of 75 field goal attempts for 27 percent.  Malvern managed to get off only 32 shots against the rugged Tuscarawas Valley defense and made 12 of 32 percent.  From the foul line Tuscarawas Valley made 17 of 28 and the Hornerts 15 of 26.  The Tuscarawas Valley Reserves (8-6) blew away the Malvern Reserves in similar fashion by a score of 46-17.

61 - TV and Port Go To The Wire 58-48 In Valley Win (2-4-61)

PORT WASHINGTON - For a while last night, in fact, right to the wire, the only team that had a chance to keep Garaway from claiming its second straight undisputed county title was having  its doubts.  The stubborn and determined Riders of Port Washington (2-5) (8-9) stayed right with the favorites until 2 minutes showed on the clock.  Leading 51-48 at this point and following a missed bucket by Port, Tusky Valley (6-1) (10-6) went into a stall to force the action.  In the lead Tusky Valley could afford the maneuver, which produced 5 charity tosses and a field goal to break it open and score 7 straight points.  Port moved from a 9-8 first quarter deficit to tie it at 22-22 at intermission.  Going into the last quarter the Trojans were nursing a 42-38 advantage.  Jim Studer led a more balanced attack for the Trojans with 19 points, Ron Lake had 13 and Mike Widder 12.  Port was led by Jim Bender and Bill Phillips with 17 and 16 points, respectively.  Tony Nigro, playing with a face mask due to a broken nose, had 9 for the Purple Riders.  The Reserve game was not reported by either The Daily Reporter or The Times Reporter.

61 - Gnaden 47-35...2nd Win Against Midvale This Year (2-4-61)

GNADENHUTTEN - Coach Ron Sakola's Indians (5-2) (10-7) made it 2 in a row over the Devils (3-4) (10-7) this season.  However, last night's win was the most important because it was a league test.  Earlier this season, Gnaden took a 67-65 overtime decision at Midvale.  Gary Dichler gave the host club a 13-7 first period margin as he collected 8 of his 17 points.  The 17 markers paced the tribe, who were never out of command the rest of the game; although, the Devils closed the gap to 3 points in the second half on several occasions.  Ray Rank, also proved to be quite a big man in the attack.  He cleaned both boards, while holding Warren  Leggett and Bob Byers out front for their10 and 11 points.  The Junior High game was won by Gnaden 35-33 over Midvale.  In the Reserve Game, Gnaden (8-7) won again just edging Midvale (10-6) 31-29.
