67 - Strasburg Overpowers Hiland 74-53 (2-25-67)

John Studer, Strasburg's All-Ohioan, culminates a Tiger fast break by nearly dunking a 2-pointer against Hiland in Saturday night's Co-Sectional Championship contest.

More than just a bit disconsolate is Strasburg pivotman Ed Yackey.  Moments before this photograph was taken the Senior veteran suffered a badly sprained ankle that quite likely will keep him out of the Tigers' District Tournament play this week.

Gene Bayer, Senior veteran of Strasburg's basketball team, receives the Class A Sectional Tournament Championship Trophy from tournament manager W.E. Laws.

Charlie Huggins, Strasburg High School Basketball Head Coach, was honored by his Tuscarawas County Class A League colleagues Saturday night by being presented the loop's Coach  of the Year award.  Handling the presentation honor was W.E. Laws, veteran tournament manager, who has stated he will "retire" from that capacity.  This was the last trophy to be awarded Saturday night and if W.E. sticks by his word it was the last time he'll be seen in this capacity.

NEW PHILADELPHIA - A smaller Hiland (11-12) quintet was out to prove itself worthy of pulling an upset.  In so doing, it gave a good account of itself by staying within striking range for a while, but it seemed inevitable that Strasburg (21-0) would pull away.  It was just a matter of time.  The undefeated Tigers had too much height defense and speed.

HEIGHT - Strasburg consistently cleaned both backboards, while permitting Hiland hardly ever more than the 2nd shot.

DEFENSE - It has been quite clear the Bengal defense is something to be reckoned with.  It limited the Hawks to 16 baskets and forced numerous hurryup shots.

SPEED - Not the running type of speed, but quickness on loose balls and rebounds permitting the Tigers at least a dozen more times to score.

All-Ohio John Studer put on another of his dazzling shooting displays as the sharpshooter made it look easy, while connecting on 12 of 13 shots from the floor, 8 of 10 free throws and snaring 15 rebounds.  His 32 points brought his total for the year to 576.  Ed Rusk, 6-1 Junior, aided the winning cause with one of his top performances.  The nifty lefthander chipped in 19 markers.  The victory could be somewhat costly as the Tigers' rugged rebounder Ed Yackey suffered a severe ankle sprain and was forced to leave the game with 1:22 remaining in the 3rd period.  He was taken to Union Hospital and appears to be a doubtful starter next week.

The hustling Hawks were small, but great and the play of Merle Mullet and Galen Swartzentruber gained repeated approval from the fans.  Mullet sieved 19 markers through the tall Tigers and Swartzentruber's ball handling and coolness spoke for itself for the veteran performer.  The aggressive Tigers were whistled for 23 personal fouls and the "Birds" took advantage by chalking up 21 of 28 attempts.  Dick Clark hit on 10 of 11 to lead the foul line brigade.  Hiland was called for 19 personals as Kermit Miller was the only player to foul out of the game.  He left with 2:41 remaining in  the 3rd stanza.  Strasburg hit on 14 of 28 from the charity stripe, but the margin of 36-25 in the rebound department proved to be another thorn in the side for the losers.
