67 - Dennison St. Mary's And Mt Pleasant Square-Off At District

STEUBENVILLE - Tuscarawas County's 2 classy basketball quintets head for Diocesan Community Arena in Steubenville Thursday night.  Interest is at a high pitch as the fans welcome the opportunity to see both Dennison St. Mary's (19-2) and undefeated Strasburg Tigers (21-0) on the same card.  St. Mary's prys the lid off Class A District action by squaring off with Mr. Pleasant (17-4) at 7PM.  The Sectional Championship won by Mt. Pleasant is the 1st basketball tournament title in the history of the school.  Rest assured the pitch is high for this quintet, as it boasts of a starting combination averaging double figures for the season.

The high scoring machine has hit the century mark 3 times this season as it rolled over New Athens 104-67, 105-63 and 108-54 over Brilliant after losing to the same club 64-62 earlier in the year.  Other losses came at the hands of a tall Wayne club twice, 80-75 and 95-80 and Smithfield 71-66.  The school's impressive record was built by double victories over Adena 73-51 and 81-55, Dillonvale 90-58 and 76-46, Yorkville 75-57 and 70-46, Smith Field 75-64, Flushing 77-37, Hope Dale 94-67, Union Local 83-73 and Stanton Local 74-60.  Head Coach Bob Smith, in his 4th year at the helm has announced his starting lineup will be paced by 6-3 Sophomore, Mark Thompson who has bucketed 377 points up to date.  His running mate at the other forward spot will be Jeff Timko (225) 6-3 Senior.  The guard spots are manned by 5-11 Ron Thompson (241) and Gary Schrickel, 5-8 (230), both Juniors.  Ed Kubat (246) 5-11 Senior will handle the pivot post.  In tournament warfare, Mt. Pleasant has downed Springfield Local 77-35, Tiltonsville 60-42 and Mingo Junction 68-60.

Dennison St. Mary's paced by All-Ohio Tom Crosswhite, Tuscarawas County's leading scorer (600) has waltzed to twin victories over St. Thomas Aquinas 93-65 and 91-49, Guernsey Catholic 79-35 and 82-61.  Other victories added to the outstanding record of the Blue Waves have been over Elyria Catholic 67-43, Malvern St. Thomas 86-58, Columbus St. Mary 55-44, Mansfield St. Peter 68-65, Mt. Vernon St. Vincent 90-57, Hiland 62-45, Meadowbrook 43-27 and Lancaster Fenwick 81-48.  Bellaire and United Local, both AA combines were the only blemishes on the St. Mary record.  Bellaire, Sectional Champion in the Steubenville AA Tourney, turned the trick 77-69 and in a slow down tussle United Local joined with the clock in a 43-42 victory.

In addition to Crosswhite coach Paul Drotovick will send Glen Carter (245) 6-1 Senior and 6-6 Steve Moeller (135) to the forward slots.  A pair of fine guards, Mike Bonaduce (155) and Chris Tolloty (228) both consistent scoring threats will open the action.  Mike Bracone (130) will get the nod for 1st bench call at either guard positions.  To gain the district tourney berth, St. Mary's sidetracked Midvale 75-36, Conotton Valley 87-47 and 3rd seeded Garaway 80-51.
