67 - Gnaden Oozes By Tusky Valley 37-36 (2-14-67)

Gnadenhutten's Bill Kohl tries in vain to gain possession of the elusive basketball, but a fine defensive maneuver by Tuscarawas Valley's Jim Burkhart keeps the Indian ace just a step behind.

Tuscarawas Valley's Jim Burkhart (34), appears a bit puzzled on how to stop Gnaden's Roger Huebner as he has already passed Trojan Larry Adams (22).  Turning to see if his teammate has gotten through is Charles Crites (31), who later was the hero of the Indians' victory.

NEW PHILADELPHIA - A foul shot by Charles Crites with less than a minute to play proved to be the difference in  the Gnadenhutten-Tuscarawas Valley battle.  The shot provided the Indians (10-9) a 37-34 lead.  Tusky Valley (5-13) had 2 more opportunities to score, but made good only one to result in the final one-point victory margin.  With 17 seconds left Jim Burkhart of the Trojans dropped in a layup to narrow the count to 37-36.  A steal by Larry Adams gave the Trojans the ball at the 8-second mark, at which time Coach Bill Frye called for a timeout.  When play resumed Dave Clugston tossed the ball in bounds to Dick Harvey, who in turn flipped it to Adams.  Adams took a shot that missed and another effort in close by Harvey was wide of the mark as time ran out.  TV raced to a 14-4 lead in the 1st period, while pumping in 7 of 14 field goal tries.  At the same time Gnadenhutten swished, but one goal in 12 tries from  the floor, the loner coming with 2:31 left in the period.

The squads battled scorelessly until 4:54 of the 2nd when Bill Kohl cashed a layup for the Tribe.  Gnaden added 4 more points to close the gap to 14-10.  Gnadenhutten trailed until 6:42 of the 3rd when it went on top for the 1st time in the contest on a jump shot by Dan Jinks.  Tusky Valley regained the upper hand at 21-20 on a setter by Curt Norris and went ahead by 3 on a goal by Dave Clugston.  The Indians then hit 2 fielders to take the lead again.  It was shortlived, as was a subsequent 26-24 margin held by the Trojans.  Consecutive baskets by Don Finnicum tied the game at 26-26 and put the Tribe top side 28-26 with 8 seconds to play in the third.  It was the last time the lead changed hands as the Indians increased it to 32-26 at the outset of the Trojan drive to take the victory.

Finnicum was Gnaden's scoring pace setter, tallying 12 points, followed by Jinks' 11.  Adams was the lone Trojan in double figures, ending with 10.  Gnadenhutten made 15 goals in 52 attempts for 29.6 percent and 7 of 12 free throws.  The Trojans hit 17 of 54 from the field for 31.5 percent and added 2 of 7 charity tosses.
