67 - Garaway Ends Season With 63-54 Win Against River View (2-11-67)
SUGARCREEK - Garaway (15-3) under the tutorship of Head Coach Glenn Bower proved even the experts to be wrong as it ended season play with the best school record since 1959-60 on a 15 win slate and a victory over River View by 9 points. The fighting Pirates had to do it the hard way as the River View Bears held quarter leads of 12-8, 28-19 and 47-39. Garaway never gave up as it hit on 14 of 18 foul shots in the last quarter to help on the victory path.
River View held the lead until 6 minutes to go in the last quarter as the Pirates went ahead 51-49 and kept the lead the remainder of the contest. The full court press seemed to bother the Bears as they committed 15 turnovers. Garaway had a well balanced attack as 3 men hit for double figures with Rich Richardson leading the way on 17. He was followed by teammates Errol Miller and Tim Miller with 12 and 10 points in that order. River View was only able to get 1 man in the double figure bracket with Jeff Williams hitting 20 points to lead all scorers.
The Pirates hit 16 of 42 for a 38 percent mark from the field as compared to 18 of 61 for 30 percent for the Bears. Garaway had an astounding 31 of 45 shots from the foul line and that was where the game was won. River View was only able to hit on 18 of 30 from the charity stripe. Tim Miller was the man of the hour on the boards as he gathered in 10 of 31 rebounds for the Pirates. Williams in addition to his fine shooting was also the top rebounder for the Bears as he pulled in 6 of 24 to lead in that department.
The Garaway Reserves (13-4) also managed to put away the River View Reserves by a score of 38-30.
