67 - Hiland Hands Tall Malvern St. Edward Setback 70-62 (2-17-67)

Driving under the board for an attempted layup is Hiland's surprise starter, Jeff Ling (44).  Striving hard to block the shot is 6-6 Andy Evans and coming to lend a helping hand is teammate Mark Hoover.

Merle Mullett (34), Hiland Hawks' leading scorer, appears to be giving the swan song to 3 Malvern St. Edward players before leaving the game.  Mullett fouled out with 1:20 remaining, but not before scoring 30 points.  St. Edward players noting the ballet actions of the flying Hawk are Lou Castelluci (13), Andy Evans, 6-6 center and Rick Petracca (41).

NEW PHILADELPHIA - The so called experts were almost tossed back on their heels in the 1st contest, as the Hiland Hawks (10-11) had more on their hands than was actually predicted.  The young, but taller, St. Edward (10-6) combination just didn't want to bow out of tourney play, as they fought right down to the very end.  St. Edward had the advantage of Andy Evans, 6-6 center and Rick Petracca, a 6-4 forward.  Hiland displayed a disciplined offense and managed to come  out 17-15 at the end of the 1st quarter.  Hiland connected on 6 of 18 shots from the floor and St. Edard 5 of 18.

The 2nd period pace stepped up a bit in favor of the Carroll County quintet as it outscored Hiland 17-10.  Hiland could manage but 5 field goals as the big St. Edward players batted down several shots when the Hawks moved in at close range and Hiland fell behind 32-27 at the midway point.  Merle Mullett, by far the standout performer of the night opened the throttle in the 3rd, swishing 11 points, most of them from difficult positions as he wiggled and twisted through the big men.  Each team led by one point in 8 different occasions before the period ended at 47-47.  Starting the last stop, each club traded 2 foul shots and after a quick rally, Hiland went ahead, 58-57, for the 1st time since early in the 3rd quarter.

Hiland's hopes leaped somewhat as the big 6-6 Evans fouled out with 4:44 left on the clock.  The outstanding Mullett left the contest with 1:20 remaining, but not before he calmly cashed 8 straight from the charity stripe to bring his total to 10 straight and paced the victors with 30 points.  Petracca led the losers with 20, followed by Evans and Tom Schreiber with 12 each.  St. Edward won the battle of rebounds, 31-27, but Hiland outgoaled them 24-18 by taking more cracks at the hoop.  Hiland connected on 24 of 66 for 36.3 percent, while St. Edward hit 18 of 49 for 36.5 percent.  From the foul line, Hiland cashed in on 22 of 34 and the losers bagged 26 of 39.
