67 - Strasburg-Hiland Meet For The 3rd Time

NEW PHILADELPHIA - New Philadelphia Class A Sectional lower bracket finals will conclude tournament warfare on the local scene as Strasburg (20-0) and Hiland (11-11) square off for the 3rd time this season.  High stakes are riding on the outcome of this tussle as both teams covet a berth in next week's District Tournament at Steubenville hoping to join Dennison St. Mary's (19-2), which qualified Thursday night by downing Garaway (17-4).  The Tiger-Hawk contest could be an about face of last year's meetings between the 2 rival clubs.  Strasburg clipped the wings of the Hawks 65-53 in the Sectional finals after dropping 2 verdicts 55-50 and 69-67 during the regular season.  History often repeats itself!

High scoring John Studer, 544 total for the year, sets the pace at forward for the undefeated Tigers.  "Stopping him is a must," says Hiland mentor Abe Mast.  The 2nd forward slot will be handled by Junior Ed Rusk and 6-3 Senior Gene Bayer as equal duty is seen for each of them.  Charlie Jones (283) Senior and Mike Reiger, 5-9 Senior, provided the Tigers with capable ball handling and outside shooting.  Gary Phillips is relief man for either, as Coach Charlie Huggins leans heavily on Ed Yackey for the rebound assignments.  Hiland provides fans with a display of 1st class ball handling and says Tiger boss, Charlie Huggins, "With a little more size no one would touch them."

Engineers of this spearhead are veteran performers Merle Mullett (359) and Galen Swartzentruber (237) both clutch standouts who thrive best when the going is toughest.  Runningmates for these 2 will be Dick Clark, Roland Stutzman and Joe Wengerd who have upset on their minds.
