67 - Class A Sectional Opens At New Philadelphia
DOVER - Three of the top 4 seeded teams in the Class A Sectional Tournament, which launches an 8-night stand tomorrow night in the New Philadelphia High gymnasium, drew away from opening action when drawings were held yesterday. Third seeded Garaway (15-3) will be the only top record team involved in the Tuesday night contests. The Pirates will be in the 8:45 nightcap with Dover St. Joseph's (0-16) Ramblers with the initial game at 7:30 pairing Gnadenhutten (9-9) opposite Tuscarawas Valley (5-12).
St. Joseph's, for tournament purposes, enters with a winless record since its lone victory was recorded over Kidron Christian, a team not affiliated with the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Top-seeded Strasburg (18-0) took Thursday night's opener, 2nd seeded Dennison St. Mary's (16-2) Wednesday's nightcap and 4th seeded Scio (13-5) the Friday night wrapup of 1st round activity. Strasburg will clash with Port Washington (11-7), St. Mary's hits Midvale (11-7) and Scio faces Harrison County rival Jewett (7-11). On the luck of the draw the brackets turned out fairly evenly matched. Teams in the upper, which include Gnadenhutten, Tuscarawas Valley, Dover St. Joseph's, Garaway, Conotton Valley, Malvern, Midvale and St. Mary's have a combined 67-71 won-lost record. In the lower are Strasburg, Port Washington,Tuscarawas, Newcomerstown, Malvern St. Edward, Hiland, Scio and Jewett. Their combined records are 72-62. Major moments of decision in the drawings involved St. Joseph's and Midvale. St. Joseph's could have picked opposite Newcomerstown, Strasburg, St. Mary's or Garaway and Head Coach Jim Antonelli decided on the latter, evidently on the basis of a narrow 58-50 loss earlier this season. Midvale Head Coach Pete Hilliard was faced with meeting either Strasburg, Newcomerstown or St.Mary's and decided to tangle with the upper bracket's best in the Blue Waves.
Tuscarawas then went opposite Newcomerstown and Port Washington had no alternative but to be paired with Strasburg. Perhaps one of the surprises was the fact that Jewett elected to face a league champion...Scio. The Wildcats, who dropped a pair of verdicts to the Panthers during the season, probably figured the 3rd meeting might be the charmer. Scio nipped Jewett only 62-61 and 76-74 in the sessions. Other tournament notes of interest were:
Programs will be sold by Strasburg High School with half the proceeds going into the tournament receipts...Broadcasting, live or taped, will cost $15 per session...Each school will receive 300 tickets for advance sale, costing $1 for adults and 75 cents for students...All tickets at the game will be $1...Each school also will receive 20 season tickets for sale at $8 each...Trophies will be awarded the tournament winners with game balls going to the runner-up.
Art Cicconetti will be the official scorer and Mayor Joseph Pritz of New Philadelphia the official timer...Doors will open one hour prior to game time...Schools will have to purchase tickets for members of their teams on non-playing nights. They were formerly admitted free, but this policy, which was discussed at District and State athletic board meetings, has been discontinued due to the number of teams involved. Altogether there are 192 players listed on the rosters of the 16 teams participating...A final note: Tournament Manager W.E. Laws, who has been a fixture in this capacity for many years, swears that this is the last year he'll be a tournament manager.
