67 - Dover St. Joseph's Late Drive Fails Against Garaway 71-61 (2-14-67)

Dave Myers (53) of St. Joseph's leaps for a rebound, but with a degree of futility as the ball is plucked out of the air by Garaway's Tim Miller.

Errol Miller of Garaway, after grabbing yet another rebound, puts it back up, while waiting to see if he misses, is teammate Tim Miller (30).  St.  Joseph's Jeff Recchiuti (35), made a desperate try for the ball, while to the right are other Ramblers who may be saying, "Pirates are everywhere."

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Behind by as much as 22 points, Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers (0-17) came on strong in  the 2nd half, but couldn't overcome a superb performance by Garaway's Pirates (16-3).  It was the 3rd time this season  that Coach Glenn Bower's Bucs had measured St. Joseph's.  Sparked by Tim Miller's 10 first period points, Garaway raced to a 9-0 lead and increased it to 21-7 by the time the quarter ended.  Garaway continued to hike the margin in the 2nd stanza and held a 39-22 halftime lead.  During the first 2 periods St. Joseph's managed to score but 3 of 13 and 5 of 13, respectively from the field.  Meanwhile, the Pirates were firing in 9 of 22 and 8 of 22.  Guard Charles Zito and forward Mark Nelson were the only guiding lights for St. Joseph's during that time.  Zito was outstanding in scoring 8 of the Ramblers' 13 second period points, while Nelson meshed 8 during the half.  In the 3rd period, St. Joseph's began to chip away at Garaway's lead and in the final stanza cut it to 8 points twice and 9 points on 2 other occasions.

But, Garaway was playing almost a perfect game and its outside guns were zeroed in on the basket.  Four players hit in double figures, topped by Don Richardson's 18.  Tim Miller and Errol Miller, the latter turning in a great defensive job on St. Joseph's Denny Capozella, ended with 15 points each and mighty mite guard Rich Richardson added 11.  Nelson and Zito were St. Joseph's standard bearers, tallying 20 and 16 points, respectively.  St. Joseph's, on the strength of its 2nd half performance, concluded the night with 24 fielders in 57 attempts for 42.1 percent and added 13 of 15 foul shots.  Garaway fired 72 shots at the basket and cashed 27 for 37.5 percent.  The Pirates made 17 of 26 free throws.
