67 - Sectional Tournament Features Surprise Team...Top Scorers
DOVER - A couple of the finest marksmen in the county, an underdog squad and a team that wasn't figured for much this season, but ended being 3rd seeded, are the feature attractions in the opening of the Class A Sectional Tournament at New Philadelphia Tuesday night. Gnadenhutten boasting the county's 3rd leading scorer in Dan Jinks, tangles with Tuscarawas Valley in the tournament opener at 7:30, while Garaway, the quintet that surprised everybody in posting a 15-3 record, hits Dover St. Joseph in the 8:45 nightcap. The Indians finished the season with a 9-9 overall record and have credit for a 67-63 defeat over the Trojans in league play.
Head Coach Jim Lower's team is led by high scoring Jinks and Bill Kohl. Jinks finished the season with 429 markers. He is a good ball handler and dangerous at all times with long range jump shots. Kohl is deadly around the key and likes to use his left hand hook shots. He is also the leading rebounder for the Indians. The remainder of the starting lineup for Gnaden will probably find Wayne Martin out front pairing with Jinks. Don Finnicum and Roger Huebner round out the attack and ably supplying backup punch is Ken Huprich and Ken Kohl. The Trojans of Coach Bill Frye finished the season with a 5-11 record and are paced by All-County selection, Dick Harvey. Adding to the Trojan offensive is Larry Adams who finished the season with 181 points and supplies plenty of rebound strength. Dave Clugston, Tom Shroyer and Ray Nist, plus Jim Burkhart all see the blunt of action for the Valleymen. In the wings for additional support are Curt Norris, Howie Haut and Dan Fishley.
Head Coach Glenn Bower's Pirates, who finished 2nd in county league play, has defeated St. Joseph's twice during the regular season, 68-40 and 58-50. The Pirates are paced by All-Countian, Don Richardson who has 212 points. The remainder of the Garaway starting lineup will be Rich Richardson at forward, Kim Sedwick at pivot post and Tim Miller, Errol Miller and Mike Gerber at guards. Ray Hisrich also is counted on for plenty of action. St. Joseph's is paced by 2 high scoring aces, Denny Capozella and Mark Nelson. Capozella netted 311 for the year, follwed by Nelson's 198.
