67 - Garaway And Gnadenhutten Capture Sectional Wins (2-14-67)
There were 4 individual photos of the following for outstanding defensive performances: Jim Burkhart, Dick Harvey and Dave Clugston of Tuscarawas Valley and Errol Miller of Garaway.
NEW PHILADELPHIA - Outstanding defense performances keynoted last night's opening action in the Class A Sectional Tournament before 1200 fans in the New Philadelphia High School Gymnasium. Gnadenhutten overcame a 14-4 first period deficit to nip Tuscarawas Valley 37-36 and in the nightcap Garaway staved off a late drive by Dover St. Joseph's for a 71-61 triumph. The 2 teams will collide next Tuesday night at 7:30 in an upper bracket semi-final contest. Tournament play resumes tonight with 2 other upper bracket contests. Conotton Valley and Malvern are pitted in the 7:30 opener with Midvale and Dennison St Mary's clashing in the 8:45 nightcap.
If last night's action was any indication, leading scorers are going to be wiped out of the limelight by top notch defensive play. Reaping plaudits for their efforts in that oft-neglected phase of the game were Tuscarawas Valley's Dick Harvey, Dave Clugston and Jim Burkhart and Garaway's Errol Miller. Harvey, until being tagged with his 3rd personal foul with 4 minutes left in the 2nd period, held Gnaden's vaunted Dan Jinks scoreless. After that Clugston took over and turned in an equally excellent job on the county's 3rd leading scorer, who ended with 11 points, including 5 in the final stanza. It was Jinks' 3rd lowest tally. Meanwhile another Trojan teammate, Burkhart, was shadowing the Indians' 2nd top point marker, pivot man Bill Kohl. He scored but 5 markers, his lowest total of the season.
Miller's fine defending effort was turned in against St. Joseph's Denny Capozella, the county's 4th highest marksman. Capozella was limited to 5 points, his lowest single game output of the season, by the Garaway ace. All the points were scored in the final period as he didn't hit a field goal until 4:36 remained in the game.
