67 - Strasburg And Tusky Winners In Sectional (2-16-67)

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Strasburg, still undefeated and believed by many people yet to be really tested, romped to its 19th consecutive victory last night in the New Philadelphia Class A Sectional, blasting Port Washington 86-45.  A number of 2000 some fans attending the session left after that and more followed at halftime of the Newcomerstown-Tuscarawas wrapup of the twin bill.  Those among that group missed the most exciting action of the tournament as the Broncos nipped the Trojans 55-53 in the final seconds.

Neither team was much to shout about in l the 1st half, during which Tuscarawas took a 27-14 lead.  But, Newcomerstown quickly changed the contest's complexion with a 2nd half press and took the lead 4 times in the final period before Tuscarawas eked out the victory.  It was a heart-rendering defeat for the charges of first-year mentor Dick  Gummere.  They almost, but not quite, came through with the school's 1st post-season victory in 18 years.  Newcomerstown has been winless in tournament play since the 1950 team topped St. Clairsville 45-43.  In the prelude to that valiantly fought battle Strasburg did nothing to hurt its position as one of the State's top Class A combinations.

Entering their tournament debut the Bengals were 1st ranked in United Press International's coach's poll, which is conducted by sports editors from throughout the State.  The Tigers will return to action next Wednesday night at 7:30 for a lower bracket semi-final contest against Tuscarawas, which now has a 12-7 record.  Pairings for all semi activity will be completed tonight.  Malvern St. Edward (10-6) collides with Hiland (9-11) at 7:30 and Harrison County rivals, Scio (13-5), the tournament's 4th seeded team and Jewett (7-11) meet at 8:45.  Tonight's victors clash next Wednesday at 8:45.
