67 - Gnaden Escapes Dover St. Joe 79-72 (2-11-67)

GNADENHUTTEN - Dover St. Joseph's Rambers and Gnadenhutten's Indians (9-9) were locked up in a thriller Saturday night with the latter coming out on top in the Indian gym by 7 points.  Gnaden had to be on its toes at all times and came from behind early in the 3rd quarter.  After the Ramblers had managed to hold on to a 54-53 third period lead, Dan Jinks tied it and with 7:40 left put the Indians ahead 56-54.

From there on the Indians piled up leads of 6 points on 2 occasions, but each time the Ramblers, led  by Denny Capozella, came within a bucket, but were unable to get the important one.  At the game's outset, Gnaden ran off to a quick 9-2 lead.  But 2 quick steals by Mark Nelson, Tom Bazzoli  and Capozella cut it to 9-8.  The Indians then struck, with Jinks scoring 2 buckets and Bill Kohl one in taking a 15-8 margin.  St. Joe tied it up at 15-all on a tip-in by Nelson.  After exchanging baskets, Jeff Recchuitti gave the Ramblers an 18-17 first quarter lead with a foul shot at :01.  Gnadenhutten couldn't keep up with the hot-shooting Rams during the next 8 minutes as St. Joe pulled out to a 39-32 intermission advantage.  In that stretch, St. Joseph's opened up its biggest lead of the night at 31-22.  The Ramblers kept the pace going, but suddenly the Indians found the right formula that pecked away at the Ram lead.  Capozella ended as the game's top scorer with 34 points.  While doing so, he closed out a brilliant career as a Rambler, with a 3-year total of 787, with 311 coming this season.

Nelson was the only other Ram to make double figures on 14 markers.  Jinks finished as Gnaden's top scorer, 27.  Thus, Jinks finishes his Indian career with 1188 points.  His total for this year is 429.  Don Finnicum and Bill Kohl gave ample support to the Gnaden attack with 21 and 15 points.  Gnadenhutten shot 30.6 from the floor on 30 of 98, while making 19 of 38 from the foul line.  St. Joseph's fired at a better percentage...40.4 on 28 of 89 connections.  They hit for 16 of 24 from the charity stripe.  St. Joe totaled a 47-41 edge in rebounds over the Indians.  Nelson and Rich Stanna led the Ramblers 14 and 13 caroms.  Jinks had 13 and Kohl 10 for the victors.

The Gnadenhutten Reserves (4-12 came from behind to cop a 32-31 win over St. Joselph.  Bruce Finnicum led the victors with 8,while Bill Lewis led the Ramblers with 9.
