67 - Hiland and Scio Survive Sectional (2-17-67)
NEW PHILADELPHIA - New Philadelphia's Class A Sectional Basketball Tournament ended 1st round play last night and a near capacity crowd watched the Hiland Hawks eliminate Malvern St. Edward 70-62 in the opening end of a twin bill. Second half of the doubleheader produced a major upset as the Jewett Wildcats soundly trounced the Scio Panthers, 70-56. Jewett gained revenge for 2 losses by the Panthers in Harrison County League play. The defeats were by a total of 3 points and not enough to convince the Wildcats and they were out to prove it. Scio won the Harrison County League Championship, but last night the Jewett fans were more than satisfied that the score was evened.
Complete with last night's games were pairings for next week's semi-final activity. Tuesday night at 7:30 Garaway (16-3) clashes with Gnadenhutten (10-9) and Dennison St. Mary's (17-2) meets Conotton Valley (9-10) at 8:45. Strasburg (19-0) faces Tuscarawas (12-7) Wednesday night at 7:30 and Hiland (10-11) hits Jewett (8-11) at 8:45 in the lower bracket semis.
