67 - Down The Line With Ed Smith
Former Stone Creek and Strasburg mentor Ken Newlon led Canton Lincoln's Lions into the Canton Class AA District Tournament for the 6th time in the 10 years he has been at Lincoln. Newlon enters the coming tourney in defense of his District Championship won just last year.
DOVER - Hardly had the ink dried on the by-laws and constitution of the new Tri-County Class A League when it had to be declaraed null and void. The main and only reason was due to the cancelation of all athletic activities in the Indian Valley School District, effective July 1st. The District's Midvale, Tuscarawas, Port Washington and Gnadenhutten High Schools comprised almost half of the new league and without them...no new league. A league meeting will be held within the next several weeks. But one league spokesman said this week it will fold if there are only 5 remaining teams, Hiland, Strasburg, Ridgewood, Newcomerstown and Garaway.
Every Class A coach or athletic director in the area has been affected by Indian Valley's move as most had already completed their schedules for next year. Now they must start all over as their once intact schedules have been punctured with vacancies. Indian Valley coaches, while realizing the scheduling situation facing their collegues are nursing long-shot hopes, there may be an 11th-hour solution, like passage of a bond issue by voters of the District in a possible May balloting. There's also talk the 4 Indian Valley schools will be merged into 2, which would cut the problems in half and might still permit athletics to continue. The Indian Valley mentors would like to see schools on their schedules hold off a little longer before seeking replacements.
