67 - Garaway Goes Down In Flames At The Hands Of Dennison St. Mary's 80-51 (2-23-67)

Center of attraction is one small basketball with a cover of human hands.  Center of the flying wedge is Errol Miller of Garaway, Steve Moeller of St. Mary's and Kim Sedwick (41) of Garaway.  Forming the ring of interested spectators are Tom Crosswhite (20) and Mike Bonaduce (42) both of St. Mary's.  Rich Richardson and Tim Miller of Garaway are at right.

The sky's the limit and the glass backboard proves Tom Crosswhite (20), Dennison St. Mary's skyscraper, goes the limit as he nimbly displays fingertip ball control for another tip-in.

One of the fruits of victory in a championship game is the picking of the nets.  That's exactly what Dennison St. Mary's forward Glenn Carter is doing after the Waves defeated Garaway.  Mike Bonaduce (42) and Chuck Jordon (52) wait to take their turns at the "cut."

Traditional presentation of awards immediately followed last night's Sectionial Co-Championship contest between Dennison St. Mary's and Garaway.  ABOVE - Steve Moeller, 6-6 Blue Wave Senior, accepts the Co-Championship Trophy, symbolic of a trip to next week's District Tournament at Steubenville, from veteran tournament director W.E. Laws.  BELOW- Laws presents the game ball as the runner-up award to the only 2 Seniors on Garaway's quintet, Don and Rich Richardson.

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Dennison St. Mary's Blue Waves (19-2) are the upper bracket Sectional champions after overpowering Garaway's Pirates (17-4) last night in the New Philadelphia Gymnasium.  In addition to the Sectional Title Trophy is a coveted ticket to next week's District Tournament at Steubenville.  Enough cannot be said in regard to the devasting power display of the Blue Waves and the courage of the young Buccaneers of Garaway.

Both clubs treated the capacity crowd to a fine display of high school basketball before the courageous Pirates bowed.  Tom Crosswhite, the Sectional Champ's 6-8 pivotman, was truly fantastic.  In pacing his team to victory Crosswhite connected on 15 of 22 action shots, hit 7 of 8 from the foul line and grabbed 17 rebounds, for one of the finest performances ever by a county cager.  In fact, he did everything last night except work in the concession stand at halftime.  Garaway was forced to limit the service of Senior ace Don Richardson due to a sprained ankle, but few fans felt he could have stemmed the tide of the hustling, hungry ball hawks of Dennison.

St. Mary's elected to open play with Garaway's style of ball as the slow moving 1st quarter ended with the victors in front 12-6.  Garaway shot 13 times over the taller foes and could connect on only 2 of 13 as the Blue Waves rimmed 4 of 8 and led in rebounds 8-2 to conclude the 1st period.  Action opened somewhat in the 2nd period.  The Bucs fell behind 32-17 at halftime as the improved marksmanship of Crosswhite, guard Mike Bonaduce and 6-6 Steve Moeller took its toll.

The Pirates netted 4 of 8 basket attempts, but could not penetrate inside the tall Blue Wave defense.  With 3:14 remaining in the half, Garaway closed the gap to 22-17.  It appeared the sputtering offense of the Waves might allow the Pirates enough breathing room to cause trouble, but almost as fast as could be recorded in the scorebook, Crosswhite swished the nets for 8 and Moeller 2, for the 15 point halftime margin.  Opening the 2nd half, the Pirate ship appeared to sink, but the young Bucs refused to roll over and play dead.  Trailing 42-23, Rich Richardson took things in command and canned 10 of his 19-point total.  It was Garaway's turn to shine as it chalked up 10 straight points to bring the crowd alive.

St. Mary's awoke with the crowd and from then on it was constant bombing by the Blue Waves.  Garaway finished with 3 players hitting double figures as Tim Miller with 13 and Kim Sedwick with 10 aided Richardson's cause.  Glen Carter rippled 13 through the nets to assist the "big man" along with the set shooting of 2 clever guards, Bonaduce and Tolloty.  In the statistic department, St. Mary's staged a blistering attack with 35 of 68 for 51.4 percent and 10 of 14 from the free throw line, along with a 36-17 edge in rebounding.  Garaway connected on 17 of 49 for 34.6 percent, while marking 17 of 39 from the charity stripe.
