67 - Hiland Slams Jewett 89-60 (2-22-67)

Merle Mullett (33), Hiland standout, flies like a Hawk after releasing the ball for one of his driving hookshots.  Unsuccessful in defending this manuever are Jewett's Birnie Wilson, Scott Samples (10), Nolan Harkins (40) and Junior Shultz (30).

Hiland's control of the backboards contributed highly to the Hawk's victory over the Jewett Wildcats.  Hauling in another carom is Terry Skelly, while Kermit Miller (43) and Dick Clark screen Jewett's Adrian Tharp.

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Hiland (11-11), the smoothest ballhanding team in the tournament practically had a ball handling Jewett's Wildcats (8-12).  Head Coach Abe Mast's Hawks, sparked by Galen Swartzentruber and Terry Skelly, who scored 8 points each in the 1st quarter, raced to a 13-3 lead at the outset and were never headed.  Jewett cut the Hiland edge to 30-23 with 3:40 remaining in the 2nd period when Mast called for a timeout.  But, that was as close as the "Cats" got.

Hiland netted 8 consecutive points to regain a commanding lead and steadily increased it, outscoring Jewett 25-11 in the 3rd quarter to carry a 63-36 margin into the final frame.  Merle Mullet paced the Hawk attack with 23 points, 17 of those coming in the 2nd half, including 10 in the final quarter.  Dick Clark and Galen Swartzentruber meshed 16 apiece and Skelly finished with 14 to round out the balanced Hiland offensive.  Don Brown topped the Wildcats on 15 points, while Scott Samples, scored 11 and Bernie Wilson 10.

Sample was ejected from the game in the 3rd period after slamming a high-driving knee into Hawk Carl Swartzentruber during a scuffle for the ball.  The Hawks poured in 32 goals in 64 efforts for an even 50 percent, while canning 25 of 39 charity tosses and pulling down 26 rebounds.  Jewett made 19 of 58 from the floor for 32.8 percent and 22 of 33 goals, plus pulling down 20 rebounds.
