67 - Next Up...Garaway-Gnaden and St. Mary's-Conotton Valley

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Semi-final activity in the New Philadelphia Class A Sectional Basketball Tournament swings into action tomorrow night with a double bill begining at 7:30.  The 1st tussle pits the Gnadenhutten Indians (10-9) against the Garaway Pirates (16-3) followed by the attempt of the Conotton Valley Rockets to stem the tide of the Dennison St. Mary Blue Waves.

Highlighting the interest of the Indian-Pirate clash will be a showdown meeting of the 2 clubs, as they split decisions in regular season activity.  Despite the fact the Bucs sport a 16-3 season record, Gnaden has been no soft touch for the Pirate crew.  The Bucs had to  go all out in squeezing out a 77-75 victory on the home court last December 23rd.  In the return battle at Gnaden, the Braves tomahawked the Pirates to a 54-37 decision, so this meeting could be a dandy.  Dan Jinks, chief scorer of the wigwam and 3rd leading scorer in the county, paces the attack.  Bill Kohl is another dangerous threat.  In the 2 previous meetings  of these clubs the tough twosome have solved the Garaway defense for 48 and 34 points, respectively.

Rounding out the Indian war party are Don Finnicum, Wayne Martin and Roger Hueber.  This starting 5 has amassed a total of 1044 points this year.  The Pirate ship, manned by a predominate underclassmen crew led by Senior Don Richardson, who has 237 points for the year.  The other starters are of about equal scoring ability.  Errol Miller follows Richardson with 212 and against the Indians in the 2 previous meetings the 2 have hit for 46 points to point out the consistent scoring abilities.  In addition, Rich Richardson, Tim Miller and Mike Gerber, along with Kim Sedwick form the Piracy that carried the Bucs to their outstanding season record.  The 5 mentioned 1st have nicked the nets for 900 markers plus the 165 of Sedwick to form a well balanced offense and aggravate any defense.

Much has been said to describe the Blue Waves and All-Ohio Tom Crosswhite and it appears the Rockets have an evening's work cut out for them.  Crosswhite copped all scoring honors for the county with 534 and averaged 28.1 per contest.  Second to Crosswhite is Glenn Carter, 6-1 forward, with 217, while 6-6 Steve Moeller adds more size for the opposition.  A pair of flashy ball handlers perform at the guard spots in Mike Bonaduce and Mike Bracone along with Chris Tolloty who has rang the bell for over 200 points.

Conotton Valley has a rocket of its own as it is paced by 6-4 Ken Beamer, a tough customer to handle from any place on the floor.  Beamer has amassed a total of 339 for season play and is always in the thick of things under the boards.  In addition to his offensive ability the rangy rocket is averaging  better than 15 rebounds per contest.  Head Coach Al Kennedy also counters with Keith Leggett, a slick 5-10 guard who has hit over 200 points, most of them coming from beyond the key.  Fred Strawser, 6-2 and Gary Palmer, 5-11, both Juniors, are highly regarded as threats along with Bob Baker and Mike Risley.
