St. Mary's Steve Moeller (24) appears to be having difficulty holding onto the basketball in driving down the lane against Midvale. Defending for the Blue Devils are Bob Carlisle (33) and Tom Booth (21).
NEW PHILADELPHIA - Tom Crosswhite Dennison St. Mary's 6-7 center, is unquestionably one of the finest players ever to stroll down a Tuscarawas County basketball court. No one will dispute that fact, most of all the 1800 some fans who watched the Blue Waves (17-2) bomb Midvale (11-8) last night. Blessed with all the moves in the book and ability to shoot from any spot on the court, he fired in 31 points to pace the Wave triumph.
Crosswhite hit his first 8 shots before taking a couple of misses on tips, but ended by ringing the bell 14 times in 23 attempts, plus connecting on 3 of 4 free throws, plus grabbing 18 rebounds. He received double figure scoring support from Glenn Carter, who tallied 14 points. And while St. Mary's guards failed to gain that category they proved their prowess also by swishing timely buckets. Meanwhile, the plucky, but outmanned Blue Devils had but 1 player hit the 2-figure column. That was 5-5 Freshman guard Gene Ford who totaled 16 points.
St. Mary's jumped to an 8-2 lead and was never headed as Midvale seldon had the good shot and hit but 11 fielders in 58 attempts for 19 percent. At the same time the Blue Waves collected 35 goals on 60 shots for a fantastically accurate 58.3 percent. In addition, St. Mary's which never had the one-and-one made 5 of 6 foul shots. Midvale made 14 of 20 charity tosses.
