67 - Class A Sectional Tournament Opens Tonight

DOVER - Class A Sectional Tournament action will open tonight with 2 games on tap.  Gnadenhutten collides with Tuscarawas Valley in the 7:30 lidlifter, while Dover St. Joseph's hits Garaway at 8:45.  The top attraction on Wednesday night's card will be the game between Dennison St. Mary's and Midvale at 8:45.  Malvern and Conotton Valley squares off at 7:30.  State ranked Dennison St. Mary's Blue Waves will be defending their 16-2 season record against the Blue Devils 11-7.

The Waves are led by All-Ohio Tom Crosswhite top scorer in Tuscarawas County this past regular season.  Crosswhite has netted 503 for an average of 27.7 per contest.  In addition to the high scoring ace, additional punch is provided by Steve Moeller, 6-6 and Glenn Carter 6-1, at the forwards.  Chris Tolloty has scored over 200 points for the year and equally plays any position.  Two fine  guards and  playmakers perform out front.  Mike Bracone (117) and Mike Bonaduce (126) are equal in shooting ability land speed.

Head Coach Pete Hilliard and his Devils finished 3rd in the county league bowing to Strasburg and Garaway.  Setting the pace is veteran All-County performer Bob Carlisle with 280 points for the year.  Carlisle is an all round floor and boardman who has contributed highly to the winning ledger of his team.  The Midvale attack is well balanced as Mike DeMattio has chipped in 223 Lee Eberly 209 and Tom Booth 169.  Additional support is found in Bob Grimm, Bob Morrison, Gene Ford and John Tolloty.  Midvale's success in tournament play is well recognized and the Blue Devils are preparing to uphold that reputation.

Head Coach Stan Shingleton's Malvern Green Hornets completeted the season with a 4-13 overall record and are expected to dress a total of 7 freshmen for the contest.  Coach Shingleton feels his young club is improving with each outing and considers defeating Conotton a good possibility.  "I feel we can rebound with them and we are about equal in  size."  The Hornets have registered victories over Tuscarawas 52-51, Greenford 76-62, Carrollton St. Edward's 65-60 and a double overtime 68-67 win over Kidron Central.  The young Hornets have bowed to Cadiz 72-60, undefeated Minerva 106-62, Randolph 71-66, Rootstown 38-35, St.  Edward 87-50, Midvale 62-44, Kidron 62-52, United Local 78-36, Tuscarawas 64-47, Randolph 71-54, Greenford 64-49, state ranked East Canton 66-55 and Atwater 66-58.  Expected to get the starting nod at the forward positions are Glenn Clark 5-11 Senior and Bill Monroe, 5-11 Senior.  These boys have scored 154 and 183 points, respectively.  Rich Stellar, a 6-4 Sophomore (104), is the club's leading board man and the guard spots are filled by Herman Brown, 5-7 Junior (150) and leading point maker, Dan Wackerly (238), a 5-8 Senior.  The number 1 replacement is Jim Yockey, a 6-1 Freshman sure to see plenty of service.  Other backup men are Freshmen Kenny Andrews and Larry Brooks, both 6-1.

Head Coach Al Kennedy's Rockets have finished with an 8-10 record for the season and were 2nd in the Harrison County League.  The Rockets have defeated New Athens 77-64 and 85-59, Port Washington 61-60, Lakeland 48-44, Tusky Valley 44-42, Jewett 78-69 and twice over Hopedale 85-57 and 73-59.  Marks in the loss column have come from Garaway 68-51,  Cadiz 68-51, Jewett 69-53, Midvale 80-49, Hiland 54-45, Scio (twice) 72-70 and 56-52, Lakeland 56-52, Strasburg 99-36 and again to Jewett, 78-69.  Coach Kennedy's club is led by Ken Beamer, a 6-4 Senior who has paced the Rockets with 319 for the season.  Beamer is a rugged performer under either backboard and plays best when he is allowed to take his shots from all angles on the floor.  In addition to ace Beamer, the probable remainder of the starting lineup will be Gary Palmer, 5-11 Junior (157) and Keith Leggett, 5-10 Senior (194), at forward positions.  Countering at the guard spots will be either Mike Risley, Bob  Baker, or Fred Strawser, who leads the scoring of the guards with 134.

NOTE:  Strasburg, which posted the 3rd undefeated record in the school's history in ending 18-0 last Saturday, maintained its 2nd place ranking in the Associated Press' weekly scholastic poll today.
