The Conotton Valley Rockets were seeking its 9th victory at Strasburg, but picked up their 9th loss as predicted instead. Members of the Rockets team are: Joe Nign, Noah Shoemaker, Keith Leggett, Bob Baker, Mark Sharp, Gary Palmer, Fred Strawser, John Nign, Kenney Beamer, Harold Shultz, Jon Nedale, Mike Risley and Head Coach Al Kennedy.
STRASBURG - Only the Hiland Hawks stand in the way of Strasburg's high-flying Tigers achieving the school's 1st undefeated basketball campaign since the 1955-56 team finished at 17-0. The Tigers, (17-0) who invade the Hawk nest Friday night, came within one game of the coveted unbeaten Saturday night by trouncing the Conotton Valley Rockets (8-9) by 62 points. Once again it was All-Ohio John Studer leading the pack as every player in the lineup dented the scoring column.
The Bengals clawed their way to a 14 point lead in the 1st period as No. 22 seemed to be the magic number. They scored 22 points in each of the 1st 3 quarters and as Head Coach Charlie Huggins cleaned the bench the scoreboard continued to roll. Studer nicked the nets for 31 and was followed by Charlie Jones' 14, Ed Yackey's 11 and Ed Rusk's 10. Ken Beamer was outstanding for the Rockets as the all around ace bagged 14 points and snared 12 rebounds against the taller foes. Rusk and Studer paced the rebounding for the winners with 12 and 18, respectively. Strasburg's control of the boards led to many fast breaks as the Tigers wiggled loose for numerous layups, enabling them to cash in on 41 of 65 action shots for an amazing 61.5 percent. The Rocketmen had 15 of 39 for 38.3 percent.
The also very mighty Strasburg Reserves (15-1) rolled to a 45-29 victory over the Conotton Valley Reserves at the start of the night.
