67 - Strasburg Shell-Shocks Port Washington 86-45 (2-16-67)

Strasburg's John Studer (23) leaps high above the outstretched hand of Port Washington's Jeff Houston just prior to releasing the basketball to score 2 of his 31 points.

Greg Bender of Port Washington, battles to maintain possession of the basketball against the defensive efforts of Strasburg's Ed Rusk and Ed Yackey.

NEW PHILADELPHIA - It was inevitable that comparisons between Tuscarawas County's 2 All-Ohioans, Strasburg's John Studer and Dennison St. Mary's Tom Crosswhite, would be made.  After last night's Strasburg (19-0) victory over Port Washington (11-8), fans attending this week's Class A Sectional Tournament at New Philadelphia, were having a field day discussing just those 2 subjects.  Wednesday night they had seen the 6-7 Crosswhite score 31 points, hit 14 of 23 field goal attempts, 3 of 4 foul shots and grab 18 rebounds.  If first looks are any indication it's a Mexican standoff.  Comparisons are impossible.  The 2 greats are completely different ball players and are fine team men.  Crosswhite enjoyed a big night, but so did Studer in leading the Bengals to their triumph.  He, too, has all the moves and showed them in collecting 29 points, hitting 11 of 16 field goal attempts, 7 for 7 from the charity stripe, while gathering 15 rebounds.  But, more important than the individual effort was the way it contributed to the team triumph.

Charles Jones, Strasburg's 6-2 guard fired in 22 points, while connecting 9 times in 16 floor tries and swishing  4 of 4 free throws.  Ed Rusk, who played little in the 2nd half, added 11 points, including 5 fielders in 6 tries and pivotman Ed Yackey snagged 7 rebounds as the Tigers ended with a total of 42. Altogether Strasburg meshed 33 of 60 shots from the floor and added 20 foul shots in 22 attempts, including 19 straight before the 1st miss.  Meanwhile, Strasburg's tenacious defense, the county's stingiest at a 44.1 per game average, was forcing Port Washington to take shots it might not against any other team.

The Purple Riders fired 69 at the basket, but connected only 16 times for 21.7 percent.  Port also made 15 of 24 foul shots.  Leading the Rider attack were Greg Bender and Jeff Huston with 14 and 13 points, respectively.  Port Washington had 24 rebounds to its credit.
