67 - Gnaden Shocks Garaway 54-37 (2-4-67)
GNADENHUTTEN - The Gnadenhutten Indians (8-9) avenged an earlier 77-75 setback to Garaway (14-3) by toppling the Pirates by 7 points here Saturday night. The bitterly fought contest was the 1st time a Gnaden quintet best a Pirate team since the Garaway consolidation. The contest was nip and tuck for 3 quarters with Gnadenhutten leading 10-9 at the close of the 1st quarter and Garaway coming back to take a 22-20 lead at intermission. In the 3rd quarter the Indians led 37-30 at the close of the stanza. The Pirates then had a very cold 4th quarter as they hit only 3 of 10 shots from the field. Turnovers proved costly for the Pirates as they committed 18 with Dan Jinks' fine defensive play resulting in 7 steals. The Indians committed 10 turnovers. Garaway had its troubles in the last quarter as it only hit for 7 points and lost the services of Don Richardson via a technical foul.
Gnaden had a well balanced attack with Bill Kohl leading the way with 15 points followed by Roger Huebner with 13 and Jinks and Don Finnicum with 12 each. The only Pirate to hit in double figures was ace Don Richardson with 21 to lead all scorers. Gnadenhutten and Garaway both had cold nights from the field as the Indians were 22 of 56 for 39 percent and the Pirates were 14 of 48 for a low 30 percent. From the foul line the Indians were 10 of 14 and the Pirates were 7 of 11.
Kohl did a magnificent job of rebounding as he gathered in 14 of the Indians' 26 rebounds. Richardson was also the big man on the boards for the Pirates as he pulled ijn 8 of 19.
The Garaway Reserves (12-4) began the night by whipping the Gnadenhutten Reserves (3-12) 44-34.
