NEW PHILADELPHIA - Port Washington's Ken Gay took scoring honors in the opener with 22 points, but this one-man performance was overshadowed by Tuscarawas' 3-pronged attack as Russ McGlothlin got 19, Roger Knisely 15 and Phil Caldwell 11.  Dick Ronald's Broncos (10-10) held a 12-7 lead at the 1st stop and led 24-20 by intermission.  They opened up a 43-30 gap at the end of 3 periods and coasted home.  Ronald used substitutes freely.  Don Durham's Purple Riders (5-13) were cold at the start, missing their first 5 shots from  the floor.  They displayed good board work, but couldn't work the ball in close on offense.  The Purple Riders did begin finding the path toward the bucket in the 2nd stanza and with Ken Gay hitting from far out, kept in the thick of the fight.  But, the Broncos had more poise and got strong scoring from Phil Caldwell and Russ McGlothlin in the 3rd frame to hike their margin.  Russ McGlothlin, who missed last year's tournament and many regular season games this campaign because of ailments, looked very impressive spinning off the post after taking passes from teammates.  Phil Caldwell was a calm and steady worker.  Roger Knisely also looked good.

Tuscarawas outgoaled Port Washington by just one, 21-20, but sank 11 of 18 charities to 8 of 15 for the Purple Riders.  The Broncos had 43 action shots and Port Washington 50.  Roger Knisely was the top rebounder with 9, Russ McGlothlin grabbed 8.  Ken Gay and Leonard Cameron hauled down 6 apiece for Port Washington.  Russ McGlothlin sank a pair of spinning shots at the outset of the game to give Tuscarawas a 4-0 lead.  Ken Gay countered with a 2-pointer, but the Broncos marked up 2 fouls and a fielder for an 8-2 advantage.  Tuscarawas took a 17-7 cushion early in the 2nd stanza and coasted from then on.  The Broncos led 53-40 with 2 minutes left.  Dick Ronald sent in all reserves and the Purple Riders worked for 4 fielders to close out the scoring.

The Broncos lost to Tuscarawas Valley January 10 at Zoarville.  A year ago they lost 57-53 to the Trojans after downing Garaway 59-47 in overtime.  Port Washington, last season, beat Baltic 64-44, then lost 64-42 to Strasburg.
