64 - Stone Creek Moves On With 52-37 Win Over Warsaw (2-26-64)
Stone Creek Panthers Tim Baab and Gail Mizer fight Warsaw Pirate Tom Bordon for a rebound.
A pained expression of Panther Gail Mizer's (30) face indicates Pirate Chuck Obryon is controlling a rebound despite the efforts of Stonecreek's Verle Endlich (34) and Dick McPherson.
DOVER - Stone Creek's Cinderella Panthers (14-8) took another successful step along the tournament trail Wednesday night, walking over Warsaw of Coshocton County in the Sectional-District play at Dover before about 500 fans. The Charles Huggins-coached Pantghers thus gained a semi-finals berth opposite either Dennison (10-9) or Buffalo (21-2).
Stone Creek trailed 9-8 at the end of a see-saw 1st quarter, forged into a 19-14 advantage early in the 2nd stanza and after a 19-18 margin, tossed in 8 straight points to take a commanding 27-18 cushion by intermission. After 3 periods it was 39-23. More methodical offensive patterns and a sticky defense were highlights of the Panther cause, plus great board work by Verle (Curly) Endlich who also was the game's top scorer. The 6-2 Senior worked his way to 15 markers and hauled down 11 rebounds, 8 more than anyone else. No other Panther reached double figures, but the attack was well balanced. John Flinner and Vic Turner getting 8, Gail Mizer 7 and Jim Wherley and Tim Baab 6 each. Baab, a 5-9 Freshman, did a fine job of filling in as the Panther starters were hampered by personal fouls. The Huggins-men completely dominated play from the middle of the 2nd stanza on, sinking 19 of 45 action shots for a good 42 percent. The Pirates, because of a tight Panther defense, made just 10 of 40 for a cold 25 percent. Stone Creek led the board work 27 to 8. What impresses many about the Panthers, 14-8, is the fact that they will not shoot unless a teammate is under the basket for a possible rebound. They pass up some good shots because of this, but it is paying off handsomely. The Panthers, employing a full-court press at times, trailed only once, 9-8 and committed ony 9 turnovers, 6 of those coming in the last canto when the game already was "on ice."
