64 - Strasburg Seeks 9th District Title (3-3-64)
Strasburg High basketball foes have been hit with "double trouble" this season in the form of twins Bonnie and Donnie Wallick. Bonnie does the cheering and Donnie the scoring, rebounding and any other aspect connected with the sport. They'll begin action tonight, as will their cohorts, against Byesville in District Tournament action in the Dover gymnasium.
DOVER - Strasburg's touted Tigers (20-1) go after added glory tonight when they take on Byesville in District Tournament play in the Dover High gymnasium. The talent-laden Tigers, rolling merrily along will be after the school's 9th District title in 16 appearances. They'll have to beat the Falcons tonight and then the Dennison-Stone Creek victor Saturday if they hope to join the District champions of 1928, 1933, 1938, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1953 and 1955. Byesville (13-9), on the other hand, has advanced farther along the "heartbreak" trail than any team in the school's history. The Falcons are looking for District title No. 1 in this, the last year of the high school. Stone Creek (14-8) also is after its initial District toga, but Dennison (11-9) won in 1936 and 1939 and also made District bids in 1951, 1952 and 1962.
The reasons the Tigers are tough are many. They have experience, good ball handling ability, are very accurate shooters and really battle under the boards. Put these attributes together along with desire and you have your answer.
Leading the way in nearly every outing this season has been All-Ohio candidate John Peters, a 6-0 Senior. He has 470 points and usually is the man responsible for getting the ball down court.
Another fine player who is a vital cog in directing the attack is Vic Gessner, 5-10 Senior. Gessner has tallied 222 points and has proved to be a touch competitor in the clutch.
Don Wallick, 6-2 Senior, is the 2nd top scorer on the team with 312 points and teams with 6-3 Junior Rick Hall to give the Tigers a great one-two rebounding punch.
The 5th starter is 5-10 Junior Rock Van Fossen who has 234 markers. Van Fossen was a key factor in Strasburg's victory over Stone Creek in the Class A League Tournament finals, scoring 17 points and doing a good job both on defense and on the boards.
Coach Bob Shahan has used 5-10 Junior Ron Lab (8-points) as the chief substitute.
