DOVER - There are many adjectives to aptly describe the 1963-64 Tuscarawas County Coaches' Class A League All-Star Basketball Team---exciting, great, tremendous, etc. All are apropos. The coaches in the 9-school circuit had such a hard time making up their minds that they named 11 to the squad---the same as a year ago. Heading this season's group are 4 repeaters from the 1962-63 aggregation---John Peters of Strasburg, Don Deetz of Garaway, Dean DeMattio of Midvale and Bruce Kohl of Gnadenhutten. Co-champions Strasburg and Midvale and Garaway, all placed 3 men on the team. Don Wallick joining Peters, Dan Kohler joining DeMattio and Randy Miller joining Deetz. Others on the combine are Gary Ferren of Tuscarawas Valley, Verle (Curly) Endlich of Stone Creek, Phil Caldwell of Tuscarawas and Ken Gay of Port Washington. Baltic is the only school not reprsented. The Most Valuable Player will be announced immediately after the finals of the tournament which starts Thursday in New Philadelphia High gymnasium. Nine Seniors and 2 Juniors make up this season's group. A year ago there were 5 Seniors, 5 Juniors and one Sophomore. Adrian Edie of Strasburg was the only "holdover." Miller and Kohler are Juniors. The 11 "stars" racked up a combined over-all total of 3,156 points. Their league ledger showed 1,414. Top scorer in all games was DeMattio who had 468. Peters marked up 416. Against league foes, Peters popped in 190 and DeMattio had 183. Ferren is somewhat of a surprise choice, since he didn't play against Baltic and Stone Creek because of illness. This is the 2nd consecutive year the coaches announced their star team before the tournament finals.
Peters is, perhaps, the best all-around performer on the squad. he can play defense, rebound and handle the ball as well as score. And score he can, racking up 1,015 points over 4 seasons to stand as one of the best--and possibly the top---point-maker in Strasburg's history. Standing 6-0, he is a strong candidate for All-Ohio laurels.
Wallick, 6-2, is 100 percent improved over a year ago. Although scoring just 3 more points than during 1962-63, he has become a feared "board man" and is adept on defense. He has 832 markers over 4 campaigns.
Ferrell, who missed 6 games all told this season, has 593 points through 3 years. He is the tallest player on the team at 6-5.
Deetz, one of three 5-11 cagers on the squad, got 270 points this season compared to 369 a year ago, but still has 844 over 3 campaigns. He is a flashy ball handler and a good outside shot.
This was the 2nd year of varsity competition for Miller whose ledger shows 206 tallies. He is 6-1 and is a good "driver" and rebounder.
DeMattio was the circult's Most Valuable Player a season ago when he poured in 531 points. The 6-2 Blue Devil has 1,165 over 4 years.
The 6-1 Kohler has been a vital cog in Midvale's machine, pouring in 323 markers and even outdoing the incomparable "Double D" on occasion. He didn't even earn a letter a year ago.
Kohl, 6-3, tossed in 259 tallies this season and has 798 all told although getting only 3 as a Freshman. He ranks as one of the highest scorers in the history of Gnadenhutten basketball.
The 6-2 Endlich tallied 203 markers this season, pushing his 4-year total to 485. He got one as a Freshman.
Gay, the only veteran back at Port Washington this campaign, hit the target for 254 points, making his 3 year total 469.
Caldwell has 509 points for 2 seasons of work, popping through 295 this time around.
