GNADENHUTTEN - Powhatan (8-2) took its 6th consecutive District baseball tournament title here Wednesday, triumphing over Midvale (4-1). The Indians now await Regional play set for North Canton next week. Only one Powhatan run was earned---and that one was tainted---as the Blue Devils committed 5 miscues. The Indians muffed 3 chances, one error leading to Midvale's only tally. Jim Volpe, who hurled the Indians to the State Championship a year ago, was the winner here Wednesday, scattering 2 hits, walking one and striking out 7. Gene Belba (3-1) was the victim, permitting 7 safeties, passing 2 and whiffing 3. Midvale's troubles began in the 1st frame when Dave Dierkes singled to center with one out, went to 2nd on an error, moved to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch. Coach Pete Hilliard's charges knotted the count in the 5th on an error, sacrifice and Harvey Byers' double. In Powhatan's fifth, John McVey's bunt single and Terry Snivley's triple off Dean DeMattio's glove in right brought in one run, Snivley scoring on a grounder, beating the throw home. The Indians pushed across 2 more markers inthe 6th on 2 singles (one a blooper) and 2 errors.
