64 - Stone Creek And Dennison Looking at District Semi-Finals (3-4-64)

DOVER - It will be Stone Creek's young giant killers against Dennison's battle-scarred Railroaders tonight when District Tournament resumes in Dover High gymnasium.  The Panthers of Coach Charlie Huggins (14-8) have surprised nearly everyone this season with their fine work, in that they have just one returning letterman, Verle Endlich, back from last year.  But, using a deliberate style offense and making few mistakes, they have rolled up a 14 win slate, including 3 tournament victories.  Dennison (11-9), under Dover native Tom Connor, has won 11 and their losses contained several close games.  The Railroaders were favored on the basis of stronger rebounding strength until last Friday when 2 of their regulars, Nick Cummings and Fred Lecce, came up with injuries.  Both are expected to start tonight, but will be in pain and probably below par.  According to available records, the last time Stone Creek and Dennison met was during regular season play in 1959-60 at which time  the Railroaders took a 56-39 decision.  Most "experts" rate tonight's engagement a tossup, as both have balanced attacks and the Panthers may be able to keep up with the speedier Railroaders because of the injuries.

Heading Stone Creek's attack thus far this season has been 5-8 Junior John Flinner with 245 points, getting most from the outside.  Other starters will be 6-1 Senior Dick McPherson (188 points), 5-9 Junior Jim Wherley (196), 5-9 Junior Vic Turner 189) and Endlich (220).

Dennison has been paced by Lecce with 303 markers.  Joining the 5-7 Senior will be Cummings, 6-0 Senior (207), 5-6 Junior Greg Goodrich (301), 6-2 Senior Frank Golec (237) and 6-3 Junior Jim Povick (153).
