64 - Strasburg Escapes Garaway Stall 27-25 (2-8-64)

STRASBURG - A packed house was treated to quite an exhibition of control basketball here Saturday night, state-ranked Strasburg (17-1) edging out Garaway (11-7).  The victory gives Coach Bob Shahan's Tigers a regular season mark equaling the 1956-57 slate under Coach Chuck Caniford.  Tiger John Peters, an All-Ohio candidate, sank a 15-foot jumper as Strasburg got the tip to start the game.  Glenn Snyder's Pirates, who handed the Tigers their only setback of the season (60-45) then "held" the ball for 5 1/2 minutes before losing possession.  Strasburg was on top 4-2 at the 1st halt.  The 2 teams "opened" up in the 2nd stanza which ended with the Tigers holding a 17-13 margin.  Garaway really went to work on the control game in the 3rd canto, keeping possession after the tip until  only 5 seconds were left.  A bad pass gave the Tigers the ball.  Peters tried in vain to throw in a 2-pointer from mid-court.  Teammate Vic Gessner tipped the ball in, but the buzzer had sounded.  Thus, the 3rd quarter score was the same as the 2nd, Strasburg 17, Garaway 13.  The Tigers got a couple of opportunities to make points in  the final frame---and connected.  They led by 6 points at one stage, but found themselves in front by a scant 2 tallies, 23-21, with 1:36 left.  Steady Don Wallick worked loose inside the key and popped in a 2-pointer to make it 25-21 and drilled through a free toss with 46 seconds to make it 26-21.  Continuing his clutch play, the fine-working Senior grabbed a key rebound to again give the Tigers possession.  Garaway was anxious now and was called for fouling Peters who  made it 27-21.  Pirate Jim Young sank a charity throw and teammate Dan Andreas pulled off a steal and was fouled.  Andreas made good on his one try to make the count Strasburg 27, Garaway 23 with 22 seconds remaining.  Young then committed a theft and pinpointed a pass to Andreas underneath. The Pirate Sophomore pushed in a fielder with 2 seconds left to make it 27-25.  The buzzer sounded and the fans could relax.  Three players did the scoring for Strasburg, Peters, Wallick and  Gessner all getting 9 points.  Andreas was high for Garaway with 7.  Randy Miller added 6 and Don Deetz, Tim Stevanus and Young got 4 each.  The Tigers canned 10 of 24 actions hots for 40 percent and made 7 of 10 charities.  The Pirates sank 11 of 31 from the floor for 36 percent and hit on 3 of 5 foul tries.  It was the regular season game for both teams.  The Garaway Reserves (7-9) starved off a fine Strasburg Reserve team (15-3) 51-44.
