64 - Stone Creek Jolts Garaway 45-41 (2-21-64)

Panther Dick McPherson is "boxed in" by Pirates Randy Miller (left),Tim Stevanus and Dan Andreas.

"Give us the ball, we won," Stone Creek's Verle Endlich (43) says as he and 2 teammates converge on Garaway's Dan Andreas.

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Few teams have been more disciplined than this season's Stone Creek Panther (13-7) aggregation which has come on to become the Cinderella squad of the county.  Coach Charles Huggins may not have the tallest or best shooters to work with, but the Panthers get the job done with plenty of steady nerves and fight.  Although down by 7 points at halftime and by 10 mid-way through the 3rd period, the Panthers refused to become rattled or change their control-type tactics.  Instead, they became a bit more deliberate and fought a little harder under the boards until they had cut the deficit to 4 points after the 3rd rest.  The perseverance paid off, as they forged ahead  of Glenn Snyder's Pirates, 38-37, with 4:41 left and held on for the victory.  Thus, Stone Creek, which has suffered through some disappointing basketball seasons, is buzzing with joy now as the current cage team has given the school its 1st Sectional tournament entrant since 1957 when those Panthers were runnersup in the county event.

Both teams made their 1st shot of the night good, Dick McPherson driving through the Pirate defense for a bucket at 7:09 and Dan Andreas finding the range from the side of the key at 6:53.  Andreas' shot followed one of only a handful of Panther miscues for the night.  Garaway (12-8) went into a 5-2 lead and was on top 13-9 at the 1st stop.  The Pirates made it 15-9 at the start of the 2nd stanza, but the Panthers drew even, 15-15, at 5:35 and then went ahead 19-18 when John Flinner fired from the side of the key at 3:31.  Randy Miller  put Garaway back on top, 20-19, at 1:37 and after 3 consecutive "strikes" from  the free throw line by Jim Young, Don Deetz mustered a 3-pointer to enable the Pirates to take a 26-19 advantage into the  lockerroom.

Deetz hit from out front at 4:38 to give Garaway a 34-24 lead and it looked as if the Panthers had "been had."  But 3 consecutive fielders from the side by Vic Turner put them back in the game, 34-30 at 2:54 and a pair of charities by McPherson drew them closer.  Deetz struck off a fast break to give Garaway a 36-32 margin  going in to the final frame.  Turner, who went scoreless the 1st half, again drilled in a 2-pointer from the side at the outset of the 4th period and after a free throw by Andreas, Jim Wherley found the range from out front.  Turner's side shot at 4:41 made it Stone Creek 38, Garaway 37, the  Panthers way, but it wasn't easy.  Only some sticky defensive work which kept the Pirates from getting any "cheap" shots and soom strong board work by Wherley and Turner kept the Panthers "safe."  They upped their lead to 42-37 by 2:07 and then held on as the Pirates were unable to find the range.

Turner and Deetz shared game scoring honors with 17 points, Turner making 6 of 8 field goal tries.  Verle (Curly) Endlich, although blanked the 2nd half, added 10 to the Panther cause.  Wherley, Endlich and McPherson hauled down 7, 6 and 5 rebounds respectively.  Randy Miller grabbed 9 for Garaway.  All told, the Panthers nestled in 23 and the Pirates 17.  John Flinner and Gail Mizer turned in some fine ball handling work for the Panthers.  Stone Creek has now the most wins at the school since the 1957-58 and 1958-59 aggregations both were 13-9.
