64 - Strasburg Stops Garaway 3-1 For 1st Ever Spring Title (5-25-64)

Strasburg High School (Tigers).  KNEELING - Larry Jones (left), Bob Black, Denny Mizer, Terry Hess, Dick Fox, Terry Miller and John Studer.  STANDING - Coach Pete Angelo (left), Rick Hall, John Peters, Don Gerber, Rock VanFossen, Bob Millis, Terry Spidell, Ron Lab, Tom Dreher and  Manager John Miller.

DOVER - Strasburg High (7-1) captured what is believed to be its 1st baseball league title by edging Garaway (6-2) Monday in a playoff tilt on Dover City Park.  Both teams ended regular season play tied 6-1.  Coach Pete Angelo called on Bob Mills (6-2) to toe the rubber and the strong-armed Tiger responded with a near-perfect job.  The only hit he surrendered was a high bounder to 3rd by Randy Miller in the second stanza.  He walked just 2 and struck out 10.  Larry Milligan (4-1) started for the Pirates of Coach Dale Kriz, Jim Wheeler (coming  on in the 5th and being saddled with the loss.  The duo allowed 7 safeties, passed 2 and fanned 6.  The Tigers, ending their season with a glistening 11-2 mark, parlayed single runs in the 1st, 3rd and 6th frames into the win.  The Pirates' lone tally came in the 2nd stanza.  Terry Hess led off with a single for Strasburg in its half of the 1st inning, was sacrificed to 2nd by John Peters and evenutally was forced in when Terry Spidell walked after Ron Lab was passed and Rock VanFossen singled.  In the 3rd, hot-stickig Tom Dreher banged out one of 2 doubles he colleced for the day, but was picked off second.  Lab then singled and stole 2nd, coming all the way home when the catcher's throw was wide.  Peters lashed out a triple to start the 6th and was sent home immediately by Dreher's 2nd 2-bagger.  Garaway's marker came when Miller beat out a high bounder to 3rd, advanced on  a walk to Milligen and moved up again when Jim Young was hit by a pitch and scored on a fielder's choice with Ed Troyer batting.  Angelo naturally was very happy because of the victory and more so because everyone on the team, but the Seniors Peters and Bob Black, will be back next season.

64 - Strasburg-Garaway Will Meet Monday

DOVER - Strasburg (6-1) and Garaway (6-1) will clash Monday at 4PM (slow time) on Dover City Field to determine the champion of the Tuscarawas County Class A Spring Baseball League.  This was announced this morning by Tiger Coach Peter  Angelo.  It was ruled, at a meeting of the loop's coaches Friday,  that Sectional Champion Midvale would not finish out their schedule and therefore its games would not count.  Had the Blue Devils' counted, Garaway would have had a 7-1 slate and Strasburg 6-2.  But, Midvale had theoptionof either playingitscomplete slate or "hanging 'em up" and Coach Pete Hilliard had decided not to continue.

64 - Garaway Turns Back Midvale 4-2 (5-21-64)

MIDVALE - Who's on first is an old baseball saying and nothing is more apropos when listing the standings for the Tuscarawas County Class A League.  The solution to the entire problem centers around whether Midvale's games (1-1) shall count or not.  The Blue Devils, since they advanced into District Tournament play, had an option of either playing out their schedule or not having their games count.  Well, Strasburg and Midvale met recently and the Blue Devils won 3-2.  That game; however, was termed as a "practice game" by the Tigers.  Last night, Garaway beat Midvale 4-2.  If Midvale's games count, Garaway will  have a 7-1 league slate and Strasburg 6-2.  If the Blue Devils' contests are "thrown out," the picture will change.  Confusing?  Yep, and the man who must decide the issue is Baltic's Tom Bellville, who is league manager.  Bellville contends THE VARIOUS MANAGERS AREN'T TOO PROMPT IN REPORTING THEIR GAMES AS THEY SHOULD, thus the reason for the problem which could and should, have been settled long ago.  Getting back to yesterday's game, Jim Wheeler (3-2) was the winning pitcher, allowing 4 hits, passing 3 and fanning six.  Gene Belba (3-3) was the loser, permitting 8 safeties, walking none and striking out 7.  Jim Young of Garaway and Don Ickes of Midvale both slapped doubles.  Tim Stevenus, Randy Miller and Dan Andreas all had 2 hits for Garaway.

64 - Port Names Gay MVP (5-2-64)

"Talking Things Over" after Port Washington High's athletic banquet Saturday night are Ken Gay (left), named Most Valuable Player; Jim Snyder, guest speaker; Jim Bates; Top Foul Shooter and Best Rebounder; and Coach Don Durham.

PORT WASHINGTON - Seniors Ken Gay and Jim Bates received top honors here Saturday night at Port Washington's annual athletic banquet in the school gymnasium.  Jim Snyder, head basketball coach at Ohio University, was guest speaker.  About 180 persons attended.  Neil Compton served as toastmaster.  Gay was voted by his teammates as the most valuable basketball player and also received his 3rd varsity letter.  Bates took the best foul shooter and best rebounder awards.  Coach Don Durham awarded varsity letters to Roger Lewis, John Foust, Bob Casteel, Leonard Cameron, Steve Bender, Bates and Gay.  The baseballers,  who were champions in lthe fall, and the boys and girls track teams were also recognized at the event by assistant Coach George Thomas.

Snyder cited reasons why average teams become great.  Giving an example of his team this year, he stated:  "The key to a championship is to play as a team, with every player being a good offensive and defensive player, good rebounder, or in plain words being a complete player."  Again giving an example of an individual player on  his team, he said:  "No matter what your ability, with a lot of heart, scrap and desire you can become a better than average ball player.  It is the  players that haveboth abililty and heart that become All-Americans."  He noted that it is possible to do anything with sacrifice and work.  "Set a goal and strive to reach it.  If you try as hard as you possibly can, then you have been successful," he stated.  He ended by saying that the fundamentals that are learned in sports will become a factor in learning the fundamentals of life in the future.
