61 - Port Schools Delay Opening Until September 6 (8-26-60)

PORT WASHINGTON - Salem-Washington Local Schools, originally slated to open September 1, will start Tuesday, September 6, instead to allow workmen additional time in which to complete new classrooms.  A general teachers' meeting will be held Monday, September 5, at 9:30AM in the Port Washington school.  Classes will begin September 6 at 8:40AM with dismissal at 3:33.  Dismissal will be at 3PM on the first day.  Bus drivers will meet next Monday at 7PM in the Port school.  Bus routes will be similar to last year with the following drivers and routes:  Luther Lindon and Neil Compton, No. 1; George Fillman No. 2; Richard Bond, No. 3; Marvin Hursey, No. 4; James Pfeiffer and Charles Knight, No. 5.  Neither Port Washington, nor Washington Township cafeterias will be open on the first day.  When in operation, a hot plate lunch will sell for 30 cents. 

The Salem-Washington board of Education requires all children entering school to present written evidence they have received or are in the process of receiving immunizations against smallpox, diptheria, polio, tetanus, and pertussis, unless excused by a written statement of a physician.  In order to enter the First Grade, a child must be 6 years old on or before September 1.  All new students entering school this Fall and who have not yet registered are to do so the week of August 29.

Faculty personnel for the coming term are:  Washington Township - Mrs. Connie Spring, Grade 1; Shirley Hickenbottom, 2-3 and Vernon Powell Principal and Grade 6.  Port Washington - Mrs. Mary Veley, 1; Mrs. Dorothy Mehok, 2-3; Mrs. June Stemple, 4-5; Luther Lindon, 5-6; Neil Compton, Elementary Principal and 7-8; Mrs. Jeanne Palmer, commercial, guidance and testing; Earl Leonhard, Physical Sciences, Math and General Science; James Pfeifffer, English, Library Science, vocal and instrumental music; Charles Knight, Industrial Arts and English; Charles Harshbarger, Spanish and Social Studies; Richard King, Natural Sciences, health, boys' physical education and coach and Mrs. Marjorie Leonhard, Home Economics and girls' physical education.  Pfeiffer also will serve as District Elementary vocal music instructor, Mrs. Mabel Gallagher is art instructor, Sally Passmore, hearing and speech therapist, Mrs. Dorothy Spring, school nurse, and Mrs. Shirley King, school secretary.  Mrs. J. C. Dayton will be cafeteria cook at the Washington Township school and Richard Bond will be custodian.  Applications for cafeteria cook for Port Washington will be accepted until noon Monday.  Lester West will be Port custodian.
