60 - Trojans Gains Regional with 8-5 Win Against Broncos (5-17-60)

SUGARCREEK - Tuscarawas Valley (10-1) has tossed away its very much unliked "bridesmaid" tag and has joined the ranks of champions.  Yesterday at Sugarcreek's Community Park the Trojans won the first outright championship in the history of the school when it nailed down District baseball championship laurels by defeating Tuscarawas (9-2).  Since the Tuscarawas Valley school District was formed Trojan teams have many times been runner-ups in basketball, baseball and football.  It has even picked up co-championships in football and  baseball.  But in its hour of crowning glory yesterday it was not to be denied that elusive first crown.  Next step for the Trojans is the Regional Baseball Tournament at North Canton.  It will face the winner of the Warren District.  The winner of the Martins Ferry District will face Berea's representative.  Both games are scheduled Thursday with the 2 winners playing Saturday for the trip to next week's State Championship at Columbus.

Clarence Cantrill who experienced control difficulty, resorted to his curve in the clutch to keep Tusky hitters at bay.  In going the distance he fanned 7 and walked as many and was touched for 8 hits.  Cantrill also proved to be a big man with the bat when he drove Bronco defensemen scurrying to the far reaches of the centerfield pasture in the 6th inning, for a 3-run Homer, the winning margin.  Earlier in the inning Ron Lake singled to drive in Dean Nemetz with the game-tieing run.  He and Jim Studer, who also singled, came home on Cantrill's long blast.  In the first inning TV scored 2 runs on singles by Lake, Mike Widder, Cantrill and Rod Cropper.  It added one in the second when Lake doubled, Widder walked and Cantrill singled to score Lake.  Widder drove in Studer in the fourth inning for the other Trojan marker.  Ivan Summers, first man up for Tuscarawas in the first inning hit one of Cantrill's offerings for a triple.  He scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Cerana.  Three walks and singles by George Vesco and Bill Fellers plated 2 runs for Tuscarawas in the third inning.  They concluded their scoring in the fifth inning on a walk and singles by Fellers, Vesco, Floyd Smith and Chester Summers.  Smith (1-1) started for the Broncos and pitched until the 7th inning when he was relieved with one out by Fellers (2-1).  He fanned 7 and walked 4 while permitting 10 hits.
