Stone Creek Shunts Sugarcreek Into Consolation Bracket (9-24-54)

Stone Creek's Panthers sent the defending champion Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates into the consolation bracket by defeating them 5-2 in the County League's tourney yesterday while Bolivar eliminated Dundee 13-1 in a consolation game. No reports were available on the Gnaden-Baltic and Port Washington-Mineral City games.

STONE CREEK'S Panthers got a two-hit pitching performance from Mel MacAfee and went on to take advantage of seven errors by the defending Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates to win the right to advance to the semi-finals of the county tourney and a sure berth in the sectional next spring. MacAfee gave up but two singles while fanning seven and and walking five. Coach Bob Wise's Pirate crew collected single runs in the sixth and seventh. John Schindler started on the mound for Sugarcreek-Shanesville and gave up three runs on three hits and two walks while fanning five. Richard Menges came on in relief and was reached for two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out four batters. All of the hits collected by Coach Leo Gower's charges were singles with five different batters getting in on the hit parade. The game was played at Baltic.

IN A CONSOLATION game, Bolivar scored an easy victory over Dundee with Jack Renner hurling a one-hitter for Coach Sucker Low's Cardinals. Dundee failed to get a hit until the fifth inning as Renner was in complete control of the contest, whiffing 12 Bulldog batters while walking three. The Cardinals collected a total of 11 hits off Dundee hurler Bob Baker, who walked three and fanned five. Sonny Mennis and Frank Leighley each collected two hits and both doubled as did Renner and Bill Gerber. Dick Thompson had three hits for the Cards while catcher Don Mason connected for a homerun.
