Panthers Avenge Opening Loss 74-70 (12-22-54)

Rod Rinchart drove in for a layup shot in the final three seconds to clinch Stone Creek's victory shortly after Don Poland had given Coach Leo Gower's Panthers (2-2) the lead on a tip-in in the fading stages of their battle with Port Washington (1-3) (4-4). The victory was revenge for a 64-62 defeat suffered at Port Washington in the opening contest of the campaign and was in style with a succession of ding-dong battles waged between the two schools in recent years. True to fashion, the game was a see-saw affair all the way with the Purple Riders holding the edge most of the way until the final minutes of the game. Port had a nine-point edge with three minutes left in the contest, but Stone Creek rallied to win in a thrilling finish. Bill Jones and Ronnie Deibel were the leading scorers once again for the Panthers with Jones collecting 34 and Deibel getting 16. Paul Frank had 21 for Port while Tom Jones added 20 for Coach Bray Toot's Riders. In the Reserve game, Port Washington (7-1) crushed Stone Creek 59-17. It was the second win against Stone Creek this season.
