Deems Tallies Winning Points In 55-54 Win (2-12-55)

Fine defensive play by the Purple Riders (6-4) (14-6) held Tusky's big scoring ace, Terry Deems to 10 points the first 31 minutes of play, but the lanky veteran potted the winning points as he netted two free throws with one minute to go. Bill McConnell has the chance to tie the mark as he was awarded two charity tosses with 40 seconds to go, but could find the bucket on only one. Port pushed into a 14-12 lead at the first stop, but slipped to a 27-21 deficit at the intermission and were trailing 41-35 going into the final stanza. Port galloped back and tied the mark before the Broncos could score and in a see-saw battle in the remaining distance the score was even three more times before Deems cashed in the winning point. Dick Davis led Tusky (6-3) (12-5)with 25 points. Ed Bates, Tom Jones, and Gary Dichler each netted 14 points in the attack for Port. In the Reserve game Tuscarawas edged Port Washington (13-3) 37-35. It was one of the best seasons for the Port Washington Reserves in years.
