Strasburg (19-2) unleashed a crushing offensive attack that knocked the Port Washington Purple Riders (15-7) back on their heels after a nip-and-tuck first quarter. Sophomore Ed Bates was the only reason for Port's first-period showing as he traded baskets with the entire Strasburg lineup. Ed Bates just couldn't miss as he tossed in five fielders to score 10 of the Riders' 11 markers while Jerry Froman, Strasburg's talented sophomore starter, connected for four goals in that opening canto. Strasburg's balance gave the Tigers a 16-11 lead at the close of the first quarter and they continued to roll along at a smooth pace with Jerry Von Kaenel and Jim Kuecher carrying the brunt of the load in the second quarter. The Bengals, missing very few opportunities to score, led 40-25 at the half time intermission. Strasburg's attack crackled with efficiency in the third period as the Bengals sizzled to a 54-25 lead in the first three and a half minutes. The Purple Riders, scoreless for the first part of the third stanza, counted only six points for the entire period, while the Tigers whipped in 28 markers and were far out in front 68-31 moving into the final quarter. Coach Ken Newlon's power-packed lineup stormed to a 79-33 lead in the first three minutes of the final period and then the reserves took over for both squads as the crowd lost interest and drifted out. Haswell scored 14, Kuecher 19, Von Kaenel 22 and Froman 16 in the Bengal balanced scoring while Ed Bates, who got only four markers in the second half, ended up with a total of 18 points to lead Port Washington.
