Port Riders Nip Panthers 66-64 In Squeaker (11-17-54)

In another of the heated struggles that have become common between Port Washington (1-0) and Stone Creek (0-1) cage teams, the Purple Riders emerged with a narrow victory over the Panthers last night as both teams launched their new court campaigns. Coach Bray Toot, forced to start the season without veteran Tom Jones who twisted an ankle in practice, thus spoiled the county coaching debut of Stone Creek mentor Leo Gower. The Panthers, paced by all-county Bill Jones who caged 19 points the first half, led at the first two stops 15-13 and 34-26 before Paul Frank began finding the range for Port Washington. With Frank and Vernon Glazler pacing the attack, the Riders took over in the third frame and led 49-45 going into the last period. The Panthers knotted the count again and forged ahead momentarily before a bucket by Paul Frank put Port ahead 65-64. With only seconds remaining, Paul Frank concluded the scoring with a foul toss. Bill Jones took scoring honors with 27 points while Paul Frank had 26, with 13 being rimmed the last quarter. Vernon Glazer finished with 15 while Ronnie Deibel of the losers netted 12. The Port Reserves (1-0) also just nicked the Stone Creek Reserves (0-1) 33-32.
